On Wednesday 17 May, I received a red blood transfusion because my cell count was down to 89. I received two pints of blood which took close to 4 hours to transfuse. I ended up spending the entire day at the hospital.
On Friday 19 May, I received a platelet transfusion because my count was down to 16. Platelet transfusions are quicker then red blood and only take about an hour.
Over and above the transfusions I am required to have 1 litre of hydration through an IV drip everyday to prevent me from getting dehydrated. This takes 2 hours to finish.
It is mandatory for me to go to the hospital everyday. The only reason I am at home is because it is more comfortable but I am still a patient of the hospital, in fact I still have my hospital identification band on my hand.
My white blood cell count has taken a U turn and is now going down again. Click here to see the graph for the last five days. I am back under the 2 mark and have to take extra precautions once again so that I do not get a fever or any infections. My state of health is very fragile which prevents me from interacting with too many people and especially children.
On a positive note my nausea feeling is getting less and I am not throwing up that often anymore. A few of my medications have also been reduced. Hope it stays this way!
This roller coaster ride will carry on for a few more months I have been told.
My next update is scheduled for 29 May 2000. |
