The
American Veterinary Medical Association mentions
declawing exactly once on their entire web site, in their article on kitten
care. What do they have to say on the subject? Not much --
"Whether to declaw is an individual and personal decision that is best
discussed with your veterinarian." They say nothing to discourage
people from declawing and they say nothing about the risks and implications of
the procedure.
Cat Help-Online
has a declaw page that, to
their credit, does talk about alternatives to declawing; but it also states more
than once that cats do not suffer from psychological or behavioral complications
from declawing, and it makes no specific reference to potential long term
physical after-effects such as chronic pain in the paws.
Commitment: Ask the Vet -
their article on declawing discusses alternatives to
declawing, then goes on to say "if all else fails, then declawing would be
your next step."
HomeArts.com: Ask the Vet
- "As for the cost [of
declawing], surgery might be less expensive in the long run than buying new
furniture!"
Molly
B Denum's Cat Pages - this site includes an article
entitled "Why I Believe Cats Should be Declawed."
On
Declawing Cats is an article on the web site
of The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champagne that promotes declaws.
The
Pet Center - "Unfortunately for the
housecat, the price of living in the luxurious and food-laden environment of
modern pet households, the cat who must 'work those claws' will end up in the
veterinarian's office sooner or later."
PetLasers.com - the pet owner's section
of AccuVet, the company that makes veterinary laser surgical equipment.
They list declaw first in their section on "Common Procedures". (Laser
surgery has many useful and wonderful applications, but feline declaw isn't one
of them. The introduction of this technology has been anything but a
blessing for those of us who believe that declawing is inhumane. - Ed.)
Premier Pet Insurance - This pet health insurance company offers a "Premier Ultimate" plan that covers declawing.
