| Role of a Doula: * a doula recognizes that birth is a natural and miraculous process that the mother will remember for the rest of her life. * she understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor * she assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their birth plans * she stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor and during the settling-in period after * she provides emotional support, physical comfort measure, an objective viewpoint, and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions * a doula facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and the clinical staff * she perceives her role as one who nurtures and protects the woman's memory of her birth experience * a doula enhances the relationship between the laboring woman andher partner, she does not detract from it A doula will meet with you before your birth to discuss your plans and desires. When you go into labor, the doula can meet you at your home, the hospital or anywhere you designate. She will then stay with you for the labor, birth and the immediate post-partum period. The doula will meet with you again in the post-partumperiod to discuss your birth and answer any questions you have. |

| My Personal Beliefs: To be an effective labor assistant, I believe that a perosn needs to be balanced emotionally and spiritually. One needs to be able to attune themselves to others and be willing to listen to guidance both from within and outwardly. Birth is a natural process that we are built to carry out. I believe that birth should be an empowering experience for a woman, a time of great joy and love. My goal is to help your birth experience be a joyfully memorable one. |
