KINDRED SPIRITS
By Debbie Seko

Home   Anna Harper sank into the old wooden swing beneath the giant sycamore and unfolded the letter she cluthced in her slender, frail fingers.  What she read sent a shiver over her entire body despite the warmth of the day.

Anna pushed back the long, silver, white hair, that hung abouot her wrinkled face, like the moss that hung from the giant oak tree beside her porch.  She stared up at the gaping holes, where slats had fallen from the white-turned gray picket fence that surrounded her property.  Her gaze shifted to the old tool shed, once painted a beautiful forest green to meld with the surrounding trees, now stripped completely of its color leaning crazily to the left where the foudnation had sunk into the sandy soil.  For the first time, she saw her place through the eyes of strangers.  Even Anna, who was not one to concern herself much with appearances, had to admit that the years of March winds and April showers had taken their toll on the old home place.

Angerily Anna wiped at her tears.  she had known Mr. Greenwall, the Chairman of the Town council, wanted her property but she never dreamed he'd go this far. He had at one time offered to by it, but Anna had no intentions of giving her home up to anyone.  Now as she glanced around at the peeling white apint and the broken green shutters of her much loved house, her heart sank.  This time she might not have any choice.
