ALGEBRA QUICK REFERENCE QUIDE
Algebra Definitions

Real Numbers
All numbers on the number line

Natural Numbers
Positive integers, positive whole numbers, & fractions that equal positive whole numbers. Does not include decimals or negative numbers. (1, 2, 3 ... 4/2,  6/3...)

I
ntegers
the set of all positive, negative & whole numbers including 0. Does not include fractions & decimals.

Subset
A set of numbers that have the same charateristics of another set

Rational Numbers
Numbers that terminate or repeat that can be expressed as ratios & integers. Includes positive, negative, fractions, & decimals that terminate or repeat.
(1/2. 0.5, 4/3, 1.33, 2/11, 0.1818)

Irrational Numbers
Numbers that DO NOT terminate or repeat. Numbers that act irrationally with no definite pattern
(Pie (3.1415926), Sq Root of 2, (1.41425))

Absolute Value
For any real number it is the distance from 0 regardless of direction
(/12/ = 12, /-12/ = 12)

Expression
A collection of numbers and symbols without an = sign
(3 +5 or /4/ etc.)

Evaluate
Mean to add, subtract, multiply, or divide
Basic Algebra Rules

Adding Like Signs
Add and use the common sign
(Positive + Positive = Positve)
(Negative + Negative =Negative)

Adding Unlike Signs
Subtract the smaller number from the larger number and apply the sign of the largest number.
( -10 + 12 = 2,  10 + -12 = -2)

Subtracting Like or Unlike Signs

Change the sign of the second number and add.
(12 - 24 = 12+(-24) = 12)

Multiply or Divide Like Signs
You will always have a positive answer.
(Neg X Neg = Postive  2(4) = 8)
(Positve X Positive = Positive   -4(-3)=12)

Multily or Divide Unlike Signs
You will always have a negative answer
(-4(4) = -16,  -12/2 = -6)

Dividing by 0 will always be undifined
(24/0 = undifined)
(0/24 = 0)
