Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 18 May 1981. Funeral Is On Tuesday For Leona JONES. Funeral services are Tuesday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church for Mrs. Lena JENSEN JONES who died May 15, 1981 at Crowell Memorial Home. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery. Lena JENSEN JONES was born in Blair, NE on January 2, 1895, and with the exception of 4 years residence in Reserve, KS, lived her entire life, 86 years in Washington County. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. JENSEN and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN, a pioneer family who settled near Blair in 1867. Lena attended Washington County schools and Midland College in Fremont. On October 20, 1920, she married Paul G. JONES, a union that lasted 60 years until his death in October of 1980. In addition to being a wife and mother, Lena was an active community leader throughout her life. Her particular interest was the County Extension Club which she served as President, and in many other offices at various levels. She was an active and dedicated leader of 4-H Clubs for many years. She was intensely interested in education and devoted many hours serving the public schools and assisting teachers in a variety of ways. Lena was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and an active leader of the Women’s Society of the Church. She was a pianist who, as a young woman, was a performer and accompanist, frequently filling in with local bands. In recent years, even though she was in her 80’s, she compiled and wrote a book on the history of the Soren JENSEN family and descendants; executed a needlepoint square depicting the history of Washington County that was selected for inclusion in the 1976 Centennial tapestry displayed in the NE State Capitol building, and was selected as one of the seven state finalists for Mother of the Year in 1978. Mr. JONES was the son of Paul and Leona JONES, longtime residents in Washington County, and was a great-grandson of Soren and Sine JENSEN, who homesteaded near Orum in 1967. Mr. JONES was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and earned a master's degree from the University of Wyoming. He served as a navigator in the Army Air Force during World War II, and was a prisoner-of-war in Germany for more than a year. After his retirement from a career in the Air Force, he served as the county water engineer for Napa, Calif., for more than 20 years. He is survived by a daugher, Jeanne J. KINNEY of Shelton, Wash,; a son, Keith M. JONES of Redmond, Wash.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jean NELSON of Fort Collins, Colo., and Paula J. WEHRMAN of Mill Creek, Wash. Synopsis:
Elmer lived with his family and helped on the farm until he enlisted in 1917 for duty in World War I. Elmer reported that his father was so angry with his decision that he actually struck him in the face. He was in training at Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico and was then sent to France where he served until the war ended. In 1920, after his marriage, he took over his father's 240-acre farm near Orum. In the 1950's, Elmer sold the farm and moved to Blair.

Synopsis:
Leo was
born on a farm west of Blair and grew up there, attending rural schools; one
school for grades 1-8 and another for grades 9-10.
These were two-room schools and went up to 10th grade.
He finished high school at Blair in 1936, was one of their star football
players and played basketball.
His
father died after he graduated and he and his brother, Ray, stayed and did the
farming for their mother. They also
milked many cows and raised chickens.
In
2/1941, Leo went to the service to put in a year and come home.
He started at Camp Roberts, IA and later was sent to Panama.
While there, WWII began and his year was extended until 11/1945.
He came back to the States and became an officer in the Army, training at
Ft. Sill, OK. He took up flying as
a liaison pilot for the artillery. He
was sent overseas to New Caledonia and the Philippines.
He
returned to Blair in Aug 1945 and he and Lorraine were married on 22 Aug 1945 at
the Congregational Church in Omaha, NE.
Shortly
after the marriage, he was notified he could report to Ft. Logan, CO, for
discharge, getting out on points. He
remained in the active reserves and completed 20 years.
On 1 Nov
1945, he started working for Soil Conservation in Lyons, NE where he and
Lorraine lived and he retired there after 33 years.
Leo was a
lifetime member of the VFW, past master of Pilot Lodge 240, past patron of
Esther Chapter of Eastern Star, and past associate guardian of Job’s

Joseph GUTSCHOW, Walter's father, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany in Jul 1843 and emigrated in 1865. He went to St. Louis where he worked as a wagonmaker. By the early 1880's, Joe was in Blair where he may have worked at his trade for a time, but by August 1888, the local Blair newspaper reported that "landlord GUTSCHOW of City Hotel bought two lots between his hotel and Blair House in order to build a stable." In 1895, Joe returned to Germany where he married Sophia M. WAGNER, born in Mecklenburg in 1862, and returned with her to America. Walter was their only child. As a young man, he spent several years in Germany with his grandmother.
As an adult, Walter helped his parents
manage their properties (they were in the hotel business until 1909 when he
traded the hotel for a 320-acre farm in Crofton, NE and he already owned the
farm north of Blair that is still owned by the family) and was a cashier in
the bank in Blair when he married Verna.
