Synopsis:
Ola
JACOBSON was born 1 Nov 1856 at Farhult, Sweden, a small
district 10-12 miles north f the port city of Helsingborg in southwestern
Sweden.
One of Ola's brothers (probably Martin) was a ship's captain, and Ola spent some time at sea working with his brother, calling at different ports in Europe. It is not known if the brother owned the ship or was hired as a Captain.
His brother Emil farmed the home place in Sweden. His brother Andrew came to the United States and lived in Chicago. His sister Yohana (Johana) was the mother of Martin FELTHEIM. His sister Anna married Alfred ANDERSON and his other sister Bengta never married. (See also #20/21 - Jens JACOBSON)
At age 24 Ola Came to Washington County, NE, to the Kennard area, and worked for Hans SVOGERSON, a Swede who lived near Kennard. It is not known why he came to this area, except that there was a large Swedish settlement in the area.
He met Mary MORTENSEN who had been born and raised in Omaha. Her parents had come to Omaha with a group of Mormons who went on west to Utah.
They were married by Judge Jesse T. DAVIS. Ola and Mary farmed west of Blair in the Brewster School District where Ola put up many of the buildings on the farm.
In 1915, they moved off the farm and buit a new home on South Walker Avenue in Blair (now South 16th Street).

Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune. 27 Jun 1964. Mrs. Carl HITCHCOCK Buried in Kansas City. Mrs. Carl R. HITCHCOCK (Josephine), daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ola JACOBSON of Blair, passed away Friday, June 26, in a nursing home in Kansas City at the age of 80 years. Funeral services and burial were in Kansas City, Monday, June 29, at 2 p.m. She leaves to mourn her passing two sons, Raymond and Carl of Overland Park, Kansas; one daughter, Mrs. Garland Reckart (Mary) of Kansas City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also four sisters: Mrs. Henry C. JENSEN (Esther), Blair, Nebr.; Mrs. Will KINGDON (Nettie), Riverside, Calif.; Mrs. Herbert HURD (Cora), Belgrade, Nebr.; and Mrs. Martin FELTHEIM (Bertha), Blair, Nebr.; and one brother, Martin JACOBSON, Alliance, Nebr. Mr. HITCHCOCK passed away eleven years ago.
According to Betty JE NSEN, Carl HITCHCOCK and Herbert HURD were related. They owned a hardware store, at one time, in Benson, NE (near Omaha). Josephine was working for a family in Tekamah before she married Carl - perhaps their license can be found at the courthouse there. Another mystery!!

Martin B.
JACOBSON loved to fly small airplanes.
He owned a large farm in central NE and often flew to Blair to visit his
sisters.
Blair newspaper, 6 Oct 1980: Martin Jacobson had built himself a racing car, which he hoped would travel 110 miles an hour.
Text from a picture in the Blair Paper (date unknown): A former Blair Man, Martin Jacobson, was an aviation pioneer in Nebraska. The late Mr. Jacobson moved from Blair and was a wheat rancher in the Alliance, Nebraska area until his death./This picture was taken three miles north of Blair on the Ray Therkelsen farm. Martin is shown refueling his 1918 0 X-Jennie airplane. Martin flew and owned various airplanes throughout most of his lifetime. Martha, his wife, has on the long coat and Martin is standing by the plane./Mr. Jacobson had this airplane when he built the present Chevrolet garage. He was Nebraska's oldest pilot. He learned to fly in 1911 and taught several area persons how to fly.

Obituary. Blair Enterprise. 23 Oct 1969. Martin JACOBSON Dies At Alliance. Martin JACOBSON, early-day Blair business man, died Wednesday at Alliance, Nebraska where he lived. He was 81 years old. Death was attributed to a heart attack which he suffered last Saturday and from which he never rallied. As a young man, Mr. JACOBSON participated in many innovations. He started the LARSEN and JACOBSON garage in the location now occupied by the Vinton Motor Co. He was this area's first Chevrolet dealer. Prior to that he had shown an active interest in flying. That was in the days when any alfalfa field was considered a suitable landing strip. He became a good pilot and one of his hobbies was to fly his plane on Sundays and take people up for rides. A number of years ago he moved to Alliance, Nebraska where he entered into wheat farming. He carried this on in an extensive way and enjoyed a number of good crop years which made him independently wealthy. Between wheat crops, he and Mrs. JACOBSON traveled extensively. He became interested in photography and he created a number of travelogues including some of the Tournament of Roses parades at Pasadena, California. Mr. and Mrs. JACOBSON had an only son, Vernon, who died in 1936. Mr. JACOBSON is survived by his wife, Martha, two sisters, Mrs. Henry C. JENSEN of Blair and Mrs. Herbert HURD, of Belgrade, Nebraska, and a number of nieces and nephews who live in the Blair area. Funeral services will be held in Alliance on Friday and there will be services in Blair at the Campbell Mortuary on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Blair cemetery.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise. 21 Mar 1974. Martha W. JACOBSON, widow of the late Martin JACOBSON, died last Friday, March 15th at Memorial Community Hospital at Blair. Mrs. JACOBSON, who had been making her home at Sutton Place in Blair, was 77 years of age, having been born at Blair April 1, 1896. Mrs. JACOBSON was well known in Blair and had many relatives living here. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans PETERSEN, who were pioneer settlers of the Washington County area. Her husband, Martin, as a younger man, was one of Blair's earliest garage owners. he operated an automobile agency in a part of the building now occupied by the Vinton Motor Co., at the time when the motor car business was scarcely out of its infancy. Martin was also an early day pilot of airplanes who died considerable barnstorming and flew passengers for exhibition rides. After some years of being in the automobile business, the JACOBSON's moved to Alliance, Nebraska, where Martin acquired some extensive land interests and turned to the raising of wheat. They built a home in Alliance and made that community their home for fifty years. Mr. and Mrs. JACOBSON retired from active farming in in 1963 and they devoted their time to traveling and enjoying life.

Synopsis:
William E. KINGDON drove horses for Dr. PRUNER for 14 years and gave what he earned to his mother so his brothers and sisters could stay in school. He was about 24 years old when he left to travel in the west on horseback to buy herds of cattle to be shipped or driven, more than likely to the eastern part of Nebraska, where they were fattened for market. After 3 years, he returned to Kennard and built a house for his mother.
Ola Jacobson hired William E. KINGDON to oversee his farm, 3 miles north of Kennard, during the summer of 1910 while Mary and Alice went to Sweden with him to visit Ola's relatives. It was during this summer that William fell in love with Marne Annette (Nettie) and they were married at the end of August.
31 Aug 1910, after the wedding, they left by train for Albion, NE where they found work and lived a few months at which time Esther (William's mother) asked them to return to Kennard and they did so, against Nettie's wishes. Esther did not want William to marry and have a family, but remain with her to support her until the end of her life. As a result, she kept William and Nettie's family at a distance.
Nettie graduated from Kister Tailoring College and could draft patterns for sewing. She made most of her children's clothing.
William, Jr. began suffering from asthma at about 6 months old.
The Enterprise. 15 Aug 1913. Mrs. William Kingdon underwent an operation for appendicitis at Clarkson Hospital [in Omaha] last week. Her sister, Mrs. Bertha Jacobson was also operated on at the same time. Both are reported to be doing fairly well.
William, Nettie and Jack moved to CA on 17 Mar 1942 where Mildred and Ted had opened a family shoe store in Barstow, CA.

Synopsis:
After Jan's death, Betty JENSEN received the following note from her daughter, Becky): Betty, Thank you for your nice card. I didn't have a phone number for you but was going to write. My mom and my sister from Dallas had both been up here on the mountain with us in August for a week. We had a great time! And mom was doing so good. The left side of her heart just quit working properly & her lungs started filling up with fluid. They put her on oxygen, she was in the hospital 5 days, then in a care center for a week. Alan & I went to Denver & spent the last week with her. I will miss her so much. We will look forward to seeing you in Blair in June. Love, Becky. Go to Original Documents.
Jan's memorial service card: In Loving Memory of Janet F. HURD. Born July 17, 1917 Blair, Nebraska. Died September 21, 2005 Thornton, Colorado. Inurnment Blair, Nebraska June, 2006. Highland Mortuary - Thornton, Colorado. God Saw: God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around her and whispered, "Come with Me." With tearful eyes we watched her suffer and saw her fade away, although we couldn't bear to lose her, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands laid to rest. God broke our hearts to prove - He only takes the best. Go to Original Documents.

Synopsis
Letter from "Sugie" MESSER (Linda): Dear Deb, Just a note to say I corrected the information regarding my family. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be considered a HURD all my life. I love and cherish the HURD family as does my brother, Greg. Uncle Earl provided unconditional love, encouragement and a moral compass for our growing up years. We adored him and I believe the feeling was mutual! Grandma and Grandpa HURD, Jan and Harold, Dorothy and Onno and all the cousins included us as family for all the fun and happy memories. I will carefully keep the family history you sent. I haven't dug into photos but will keep your project in mind as I begin to scan all our pictures this winter. I am writing my memoir and have a story I wrote that I shared with Becky. I'll send it to you via e-mail. I've also begun genealogy research on my own family names - ROOD and TAYLOR. I come across many HURD names in NY & CT census. They make me smile and wonder...Have our families known one another for centuries? Best Wishes for your continued success with all your research. Isn't it wonderful that we can share so easily via the Internet? As ever, Sugie. P.S. I have stacks of letters and WWII memorabilia from Uncle Earl. My plan (now that I'm retired) is to transcribe the letters then put them in an archive somewhere. Omaha seems the logical place since it concerns Nebraska history and people. Again, I'll remember your projnect and website when I work on all those precious documents.

World Herald (date
unknown): Pheasant Hunting: Brothers Bridge Distance, Time to
Revive Memories of Youth by Larry Porter, World-Herald Staff Writer.
Lyons, Neb. - Brothers Leo and Ray Hooks celebrated the opening day of
Nebraska's pheasant season last weekend by hunting together for the first
time since before World War II./Leo, 81, and Ray, 79, grew up on a farm near
Blair and spent countless hours hunting together as youngsters. But
the last time they hunted together was in the fall of 1940./Leo Hooks joined
the service in February 1941. He had a low draft number, so he decided
to join up and get his year in the service out of the way./"I spent a
little more than a year in the service," Leo said, grinning.
"Almost five."/Ray Hooks moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1942 because
he said the move benefited his wife's health. She died last year,
which prompted the idea of him returning to Nebraska to hunt once again with
his brother./"I've got to have something to do," said Ray, who
will turn 80 next month. "I've got to keep busy. Some of
the relatives on my wife's side said, 'Why don't you come to Nebraska when
the pheasant season is open.' I thought it was a good idea."/Leo,
who settled down in Lyons after the war, continued to hunt. His most
devoted hunting companions the last 10 years have been his daughter,
Melissa, and her husband, Don Johnson./"We've been married 10
years," said Johnson, a cancer research scientist at the University of
Nebraska Medical Center. "When I married her, she said, 'Let's go
hunting with my father.' She didn't have a shotgun, so the first
present I bought her was a 20-gauge shotgun so she could go hunting with
us."/Ray, however, hadn't fired a shotgun in 10 years./"We went
out to the trap yesterday so we could shoot a little," Ray said.
"I was going dove hunting at home this fall to practice up for
this. Where we went 10 years ago had all changed to orange groves
instead of fields, so we never got a shot."/Both brothers tested an
artificial knee in the thick, tall grass of a few Conservation Reserve
Program fields./"I got a left knee two years ago," Ray said as the
brothers took a mid-morning coffee break "and Leo got a right one nine
years ago. I had no idea it was going to be that hard to walk.
The grass was two feet over my head, and I couldn't have seen to shoot if
anything did get up - which it didn't."/Leo admitted during the past
few years that he has increasingly become a blocker for Melissa and Don
Johnson./"I heard that they take him to the end of the field and he
waits there while they drive the birds to him," Ray said,
chuckling. "So I said when I get out here I'm going to start
limping."/Although neither brother got a shot during the first few
hours, the moment they entered a field together was special for Don
Johnson./"Watching them was more exciting than the hunting,"
Johnson said. "When the sun came up and it was semi-cloudy, those
two old guys with similar silhouettes against the sky walked into the field
together. They talked about how things were before and how it is
now. It was just like back when they were 17 and 15 again. It
was beautiful to see those two old guys try to relive what they last did
together 59 years ago. It was wonderful."/They harkened back to
other opening days when they each didn't have an artificial knee and they
could walk forever./"There was a line of car lights, a solid line of
lights, before daybreak from Omaha heading up north," Ray Hooks
recalled. "But it wasn't crowded then, even with all the
cars. There was a lot more space, and the hunters spread
out."/The brothers hunted hear Wausa, and farmers in the area were glad
to see them./"Corn in those days didn't get up more than
neck-high," said Leo, who stands 5-foot-5. "You could shoot
anything over the corn. And people there were glad to see you because
the pheasants were so thick up there that they'd eat the corn right out of
the ground after the farmers planted it."/Because farming practices
were far less efficient, the habitat was much more suited to pheasants then
than it is today, the brothers said. Corn fields were weedy, and so
were expansive fencerows and roadside ditches. Ringnecks boiled out of
every draw and patch of weeds./"The year after Leo went into the
service," Ray recalled, "some friends and I went up around Wausa.
I had a 12-gauge. A pheasant got up, I pulled the trigger and nothing
happened. Something was wrong with the shotgun. So I switched to
a single-shot .410 that I also brought. There were so many pheasants
that I got my limit of five and took only eight shots."/Leo
nodded./"We used to be pretty good shots," the older brother
said./Ray's eyes brightened, and he broke into a grin./"We raised a lot
of chickens," Ray said, "When those first spring chickens got
ready to each, they were wild. We couldn't catch them. So we'd
shoot them in the head with a .22."/Their father introduced them to
hunting as boys. There were no hunter education classes back then, but
fathers went to great lengths to teach their children how to safely handle
firearms./"Dad had an old .22 single-shot rifle," Ray Hooks
said. "He filled the barrel with lead so we couldn't put a bullet
in it. We were taught how to carry it. We carried it around and
never pointed it at anyone. That's how we learned to shoot."/Once
the brothers learned how to safely carry a gun, they were able to use their
father's shotgun - with his permission. They shared a .410 during the
early years. Their father later bought them a .22 Marlin rifle, which
they also shared./For Ray, fishing has replaced hunting as his top outdoor
adventure. At times, it is the same for Leo./"It's easier to
fish," Leo said. "We have fished together several times over
the years. But I still love to get out and just see the birds.
But maybe close to 50 percent of the CRP in this area has come out in the
last two years. That is affecting the bird population. There are
very few birds today compared to what we saw two years ago. It used to
be nothing to see 100 to 150 birds a day. This morning we've probably
seen 10."/The lack of birds, however, did nothing to dampen the
brothers' reunion./"Whether we get anything or not, it's just nice to
be outdoors," Ray said. "The best part about all of this is
getting back together again. When you're 1,300 miles apart, you don't
get together too often." Caption under picture:

Annie and Tracy had a small band in which Annie played piano. She also played piano for silent moving pictures at the Blair Theatre.
Betty Jensen remembers a family reluctance to talk much about Tracy McCARDELL and that he was known within the family as something of a "rounder." Census information does nothing to dispel that perception! (See below)

Blair Enterprise, 16 Oct 1947: Alice JACOBSON Wed in Home Ceremony. A beautiful candlelight ceremony was solemnized at the Ola JACOBSON home on South Walker Avenue at four o'clock Sunday afternoon, October 12th, when his daughter, Alice, became the bride of William ZIEGLER, son of Mrs. Margaret ZIEGLER of Blair. Rev. Sidney McCRAIG performed the double ring ceremony in the presence of fifty immediate relatives. The autumn color scheme was carried in the decorations and the altar was decorated with a white wedding bell, white tapers, green palms and baskets of garden flowers. Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. McCRAIG, accompanied at the piano by Miss Dorothy HURD, niece of the bride, sang "Because." Martin JACOBSON, brother of the bride, lighted the candles. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a lace trimmed street length powder blue dress and had a corsage of red and white roses. Mrs. Bertha HOOKS was her sister's matron of honor. She wore a cinnamon brown street length dress and had a corsage of yellow and orchid baby chrysanthemums. Melvin ACKERMAN, brother-in-law of the groom, served as best man. The groom's mother was attired in a sheer blue dress and wore a corsage of sweet peas. Following the ceremony, a reception and dinner was held in the JACOBSON home. The Misses Dorothy HURD, Margie HOOKS and Darlene and Coletta HUNT, nieces of the bride and groom served. Miss Marguerite ZIEGLER, sister of the groom, had charge of the guest book and Mrs. Martin JACOBSON assisted in opening the gifts. Mrs. William KINGDOM (sic) of Riverside, California, presented corsages of baby chrysanthemums to each lady present. Following the reception, the couple left for a ten day honeymoon to Denver Colorado. For her going away costume, the bride wore a green and red checked wool suit and an American Beauty wool coat. The couple plan to reside in Blair.
