Synopsis:

• "Budd," the only name on the tombstone, is buried beside his parents in Auburn.  He had gone fishing with brother Durwin, fell into the water and, being epileptic, had a seizure and drowned.
• Pearl never married, and remained with her father to care for him, and is buried with her parents in Auburn.  Maxine Hoag Slade remembers visiting Walter and Pearl in Blue Mound, KS.  She remembers that there was a "family day" at L.W. Clark's farm and that evening, Pearl passed away unexpectedly within an hour after everyone left.  She had been working on a flower garden quilt.  Uncle Durwin came and took Walter back to his home in NE.  In less than eight years, five members of the family passed away.  SOURCE:  Data sheet prepared by Maxine Slade and provided to Deb/Dale Morrow c. 1983.

DEATH/OBITUARY/CEMETERY RECORDS

Obituary:  BODY OF FORMER AUBURN WOMAN INTERRED HERE:  Mrs. W.W. ADAIR, For More Than Twenty Years A Resident Of Auburn, Brought Back from Missouri Home and Buried Beside Body of Son, Who Died In 1890:  The body of Mrs. W.W. ADAIR, who passed away at her home in El Dorado Springs, MO, 28 Dec, was brought to Auburn Wednesday night and taken in charge by Undertaker Furlong, and at 10 o'clock Thursday morning a funeral service was held at the cemetery chapel and interment followed in Sheridan Cemetery.  The service was conducted by Rev. J.W. HENDERSON of the First Methodist Church and music was furnished by the male quartet, composed of F.C. GRANT, C.E. HOBENSEE, L.E. FRASER, and Chris SCHACHT, who in a touching manner rendered "Rock of Ages" and "Going Down the Valley One by One."  The pallbearers were William WHITWELL, C.A. SOUDERS, William HUMPHREY, C.A. RADMSCHER, Elmer SHOEMAKER, and Charles ERNST.  The family had enjoyed a splendid Christmas day, the circle being increased by the presence of the son, D.W. of Genoa, and little granddaughter, Betty Jane CRICHTON, of Omaha, all apparently being in the best of health and spirits.  Late in the evening, she suffered from a sudden attack of acute indigestion, which was followed by pneumonia the next day.  This she was unable to withstand, and passed away Monday evening.  Martha Jane BURKE was born near Circleville, OH, 5 Jun 1851, and at the time of her death was aged 74 years, 6 months, 23 days.  In 1868, she came to IA and 27 Aug 1871, was united in marriage to W.W. ADAIR at Shellrock, IA.  Five children were born to this union, four of whom, with the husband, survive her.  The children are Mrs. Blanche CLARK, Blue Mound, KS; Mrs. Ethel CRICHTON, Omaha, NE; Durwin ADAIR, Genoa, NE; and Pearl ADAIR, who has always lived at home.  Her oldest child, a son, was drowned in the Nemaha River, north of town, while the family were residents of Auburn, on 22 Aug 1890.  Mr. and Mrs. ADAIR celebrated their golden wedding at their home in El Dorado Springs, on 27 Aug 1921, at which time all the children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild were present.  In 1877, she with her husband, left the IA home and moved to Smith County, KS, and 6 years later, in 1883, came to Auburn, residing here over 20 years.  She united with the Methodist Church in this city, shortly after coming here, and retained her membership until her removal to El Dorado Springs, transferring to the church at that place.  Much of her life was spent caring for the sick and needy and she was ready to go when called home by her heavenly Father.  The husband and all the children save one, were present when the last earthly rites were performed for their loved one.  The surviving members of the family have the sympathy of many Auburn friends in the loss of this good woman.  Source:  The Nemaha Herald, Friday, 8 Jan 1925.

• Text of Edna and Don ROBBINS' 50th wedding anniversary brochure:  We, the proud family of Don and Edna ROBBINS, would like to announce an occasion of great importance and joy.  These two very special people will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary and Don's 74th Birthday on June 29, 1984, in Maui, Hawaii.  We are

• Betty Jane (CRICHTON) JENSEN has vivid memories of visiting the CLARK farm as a child and playing with the children, especially Edna.  After more than 50 years, through the tracking of the genealogy, Betty and Edna were reunited and were able to visit one another and correspond. 
• Information was provided by Edna CLARK ROBBINS on Lewis CLARK's family.  A summary follows.  Lewis lived with his parents in IL during his younger years.  He was one of 12 children - 6 boys and 6 girls.  At the age of 21, he married Euphema Carman RUPPERT (22 Oct 1884) and they settled in Agra, KS.  They had one son, Victor Ruppert CLARK, born in 1887 in a sod house in Agra, KS.  Euphema got consumption soon after they were married and passed away at Agra, KS.  She is buried 4 miles north of Agra.  Reports differ as to the date of her death, but it was probably 1888, having been married three years and leaving an infant son.  Lewis and Victor moved to Horton, KS and lived with Lewis's youngest brother, Kearney, and his wife, Vina, for a couple of years.  Through a sister, Lewis then met Blanche ADAIR, who lived in Auburn, NE.  They were married 11 Mar 1894.  Lewis, Blanche and Victor then moved to Agra, KS and bought a small farm there.  Two children were born there.  Minta Pearl on 14 Jan 1896 and Una Grace on 2 July 1897.  After living there 6 years, Lewis and his family moved to Hoyt, KS, a small town north of Topeka.  Edna Pauline was born on 20 Jul 1903 and they stayed in Hoyt only a short time after her birth.  Lewis had several sisters who lived near Whittier, CA.  They all wanted him to bring his family there to live.  He finally decided to try it.  He took his family and went by train to Hemet, CA.  He built a home where the heart of downtown Hemet stands now.  Edna learned to walk around the framework while the house was being built.  They lived there 2 years.  Lewis never could get used to carrying a lantern and shovel in order to irrigate at night, which everyone had to do as the water was only turned on at night.  He moved back to KS.  This time, he moved to Abilene, where Verne Adair CLARK was born on 13 Jan 1906.  In 1909, Lewis decided to leave that part of KS and look for a farm in the eastern part of the state.  That's when he found a 120-acre farm in Linn County, near Blue Mound, KS.  Lewis was really ready to settle down when he saw this place - very good soil, all level ground, nice buildings, 3 miles from town and 1 mile from school - all he could ask for!  A good many years after that, he had a chance to buy a Variety Store in Blue Mound.  He did just that and he and Blanche ran it for three years.  He rented out his farm land at that time.  At the end of three years, Blanche started having very poor health, so the family farm was put up for sale.  After selling it, the family moved to El Dorado Springs, MO.  Lewis bought a place there, and with all kinds of mineral water at the Springs, it seemed to help Blanche.  After living at El Dorado Springs a few years, they had to take the farm back at Blue Mound, KS as the person who bought it could not make the payments he had agreed to make.  So the family moved back to the farm near Blue Mound.  All the children were married then except Verne and Edna.  Lewis lost his wife Blanche, on 27 Mar 1928.  She was buried at the Blue Mound cemetery.  Verne and Edna helped Lewis to keep things going on the farm after Blanche died.  Through his brother, Kearney, Lewis met a lovely lady from Horton, KS.  Her name was Bertha Fenn CRAWFORD, a widow.  She was born 4 Sep 1881 at White Cloud, KS.  She and Lewis were married 10 Mar 1930.  They lived on the farm near Blue Mound, KS for over ten years.  Lewis had the misfortune to require surgery and removal of a foot due to poor circulation.  He was able to get around with an artificial limb.  He even re-roofed the chicken house and could still drive a car.  But the farm became too much for him to keep up in his usual self-sufficient and very modern manner.  So he rented it out and they moved into Blue Mound.  Lewis passed away at the age of 80 years and 3 weeks.  We all were with him on his 80th birthday and he enjoyed that so much!  Lewis passed away on 13 Nov 1943.  He had one of the first automobiles in Linn County, KS.  In later years, he would purchase his cars from, and then have them serviced by, Peatman Motor Co., in Mound City, KS.  He and Bertha were in Mound City having his car serviced when Lewis went to the restroom.  He didn't return and when they checked on him, he had passed away.  He is buried in the family plot at Blue Mound Cemetery.  He was a wonderful man - so kind, always willing to help people out.  My father and I were very close.  He was an excellent father.  We used to sit out on our front porch on the farm in the evenings and have such good talks together.  He was very interested in astronomy.  We saw many a beautiful sunset, many a full moon, and all kinds of cloud formations.  The only regret that really hurts is that he never lived to see astronauts go to the moon for I know how he would have reacted to that - it would have been one of the greatest moments of his life.
• A footnote to Edna's narrative was provided by Maxine Hoag Slade, Lewis's granddaughter.  The text follows.  My Grandfather, L.W. Clark of Blue Mound, KS had a strong and favorable influence on my life.  We visited back and forth frequently until I was 18 years old and moved away from KS to AZ (1918-1937).  Then I wrote him regularly and visited him every couple of years.  He was a man ahead of his time.  He was very modern and innovative.  On his farm, he wanted a new garage, so he designed and built a beautiful rock one.  He wanted a bath tub and bath room in the house, so he ordered a tub and put piping in the house and yard to accommodate it.  He had water in the house, but from a well or cistern.  He insisted he could have gas lights and managed to do so.  He wanted to improve his yard, so designed a gold fish pond, then built it and supplied it with water from a well.  He loved home-made ice cream and to make it and serve it to family and friends, so he had an ice house on the farm and supplied it from his own pond.  He wanted to store some of his beautiful and delicious fruits and vegetables to have them out of season, so he had a large and very effective cave on the farm.  There as a smoke house to preserve and store his meats, from animals that he fed and cared for to give the best of meat at butchering time.  He wanted to have shelled corn for his stock, so he fixed up a corn sheller.  He could also sharpen his own knives and farm tools with attachments he thought up.  Una and Edna both played the piano and Verne the saxophone.  Grandad wanted to record it for his own use - so he figured out how to do it in connection with an old-fashioned victorla [sic] (Victola).  Then he could and did erase records, make records and play records.  For him, there as a season and time for everything (Job in Ecclesiastes).  They worked hard, but they enjoyed a good life; made the most of the talents God gave him; and certainly had faith to keep farming in eastern KS and trusting God for rain at the right time and good weather to raise and harvest the crops year after year.  He also took time to help others and to smell the roses.  It was at his house that I learned to play and be competitive in checkers, dominoes, "42," carom board and related games.  No matter the weather, the day, or what was at hand, early morning and about 4:00 p.m., it was time for chores.  He kept bee hives and bees for honey and the crops; had chickens and eggs to sell and for family use; milk and beef cattle; separating his own cream for sale and family use; also raised horses, hogs and sheep.  He had a family orchard, a wonderful strawberry patch, and raised crops to feed the animals and to sell.  The garden was large and outstanding, always three kinds of corn - pop corn, corn on the cob and field corn.  Along the side of the big garden, next to the road, he would plant flowers for those passing by to enjoy as well as to keep down certain bugs and pests.  He knew the best fruits and vegetables from each crop and would save them for seed and planting for the next year.

• Donald Lewis HOAG was in the U.S. Military service, a flight engineer assigned to a crew ferrying gasoline over the Hump to China during WWII.  He was killed in a crash shortly after take-off.  The book The Sun Rose Late sets forth the details.  He was buried first at the International Cemetery in Dacca, India and was moved to San Diego after the war.

Synopsis: 

• Gertrude Bessie (SHADLEY) ADAIR had a brother, Clayton Shadley, b 1899, d. 1941.  He had married Lydia DRECSEN who d. 1973 and was buried in Kennard, NE.  Lydia was related to Henry JENSEN (see #4) and Henry went with Betty JENSEN to the funeral, with hope that Gertrude might come to the funeral.  Clayton lived in TX until his death.  Others buried in Kennard, near Clayton, include Otis DRECSEN (b. 3 Jun 1896, d. 7 Jun 1898), Anna N. DRECSEN (d. 1938), and Henry C. DRECSEN (d. 1958).  
• Durwin owned bars in Ashland and Mitchell, NE. 
• Betty (CRICHTON) JENSEN spent many summers with her Uncle Durwin and Aunt Gertrude when she was a child and spent weekends with them in Ashland when she was at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
• Gertrude disappeared on 29 Jan 1941 when she would have been about 53 years old.  No trace of her was ever found.  Betty (CRICHTON) JENSEN's father, William Seaman CRICHTON spent many hours trying to find out her whereabouts.  He checked hospitals, mental hospitals, sent pictures, etc.  Betty was tasked by her father to attend Clayton's funeral in 1941, in case Gertrude might show up at the funeral. 
• Gertrude bought a train ticket from Mitchell to Grand Island, NE.  She left many belongings behind, plus left at about the time her first grandchild was to be born.
• Gertrude had a jeweled Eastern Star ring and jeweled Rebecca pin.  She was never seen not wearing these but she left them behind, along with a suitcase of other belongings for each of her daughters. 
• According to her daughter, Gertrude Elizabeth, Durwin thought she had gone to be with Marie because Marie was pregnant.  For a long time, they believed Marie could not have children and there was concern about her pregnancy because of her age.  Durwin drove to Marie's to pick up Gertrude and discovered she wasn't there.  Marie and Durwin called Gertrude E. in Albion to see if her mother was there.  She was not.  They all met at the house in Mitchell.  The girls found the suitcases their mother left for them in a closet.  They also found all of her recognizable clothing in the closet; however, they discovered sacks of cloth remnants (their mother was an excellent seamstress) and concluded that she had been making herself a new wardrobe and planning her disappearance for as much as three or four months. 
• After 7 years, she was declared legally dead, and Durwin remarried.  He retired and moved to Osceola, NE.  He attended Betty's daughter's (Judy) wedding in 1959.  He is buried in Osceola.
• The Shadleys lived in "The Dailys?" south of Sterling, CO, near Akron, CO.  They had lived in Auburn, Nemaha County, NE where Hal worked on the railroad.
• Gertrude had the following sisters and brothers:  Clarence (b. Mar 1886); Sylvia (b. Aug 1889); Harry (b. Aug 1891); Albert (b. Nov 1893); Grace (b. Oct 1895); Olive (b. Feb 1898); and Clayton (b. Dec 1899).  Go to Tombstones
• Obituary.  Osceola, NE, The Osceola Record, 20 Jul 1961.  Durwin ADAIR.  Durwin Walter ADAIR, son of William Walter ADAIR and Martha Jane BURKE was born in Clarinda, Iowa on May 17, 1882.  He was united in marriage to Bessie Gertude [sic] SHADLEY on January 29, 1903 at Auburn, Nebr.  To this union two daughters were born, Ethel Marie PERRY and Gertrude Elizabeth PETERSON.  On March 12, 1958 he was united in marriage to Mayme W. JOHNSON at Medford, Oklahoma.  He passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Osceola on July 15, 1961 at the age of 79.  He had been a resident of Osceola for 25 years.  He is survived by his wife, Mayme, two daughters, Mrs. Marie PERRY of Tehachapi, California and Mrs. Gertrude PETERSON of Silver Creek, Nebr., and three granddaughters, Myrla, Gayle and Jane.  Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. July 18, 1961 at the Kepner Funeral Home with Rev. Robert V. JOHNSON officiating.  Mrs. Clyde SMITH accompanied Mrs. John OSENBAUGH who sang "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Garden of Prayer."  Escorts were Ervin GROSSNICKLAUS, Frank MURPHY, James PULLIAM, Clyde SMITH, Erasmus BURRITT and Lawrence BOWE.  Interment was in the Osceola cemetery.
