History of Aromatherapy

Aromatic and oils have been used for many thousands of years.   The Vedic of India, dating from around 2000BC, lists over 700 substances.  The Egyptians dating from 15th Century  BC shows women wearing perfumed cones on their heads and as the heat melted the cones their bodies would be waxed and scented.  Moving into the 20th Century was first coined in 1928 by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, the French chemist working in the family perfumery business.  He became fascinated with the therapeutic of the oils after discovering by accident that Lavender was able to heal a severe burn on his hand quite rapidly and help prevent scarring.

The Use of Oils

Each oil is individually blended for the recipient according to their preferred choice and their current situation i.e. pregnancy, skin allergies etc.  Oils have been found to relieve minor ailments or simply to ease tension with a fully body massage.  These concentrated essences from plants have been valued throughout history for their therapeutic properties.  'Carrier Oils' are used to dilute essential oils for use in Aromatherapy Massage, containing vitamins, proteins and minerals they are highly effective moisturisers.  These carrier oils provide many of the nutrients that the skin needs to keep it smooth and supple.

What is Aromatherapy?

'Aroma' derives from a Greek word for 'spice'.  In today's Aromatherapy the word more broadly means fragrance. 'Therapy' means treatment, so Aromatherapy literally means curative treatment by the use of scent.
