| James L. Ashbrook settled in Pulaski Co., KY by 1808 when he first appears on tax list as a male > 21. It appears from later census records that he was born in NC. Also living in Pulaski Co. during this time frame was his sister and brother-in-law Sarah (Ashbrook) and Smith Williams. James is found 1806 in Jackson Co., TN among those listed as "Petitioners for Reduction of Constitutional Limits of Jackson Co., TN" along with his father and younger brother, Moses Ashbrook, SR. and Moses Ashbrook, Jr. In neighboring Smith Co. 1807 James purchased live stock, including a black mare, from the estate of Matthew Harper.
