When most people hear the word, rat, their initial reaction is to shudder and think of vermin coming up from the sewers. However, domesticated "fancy" rats couldn't be further from the stereotype. They are actually clean, loving, intelligent animals. They quickly bond with their keepers, readily show affection and frequently groom themselves, keeping themselves cleaner than most other domesticated animals.

Although the current rat fancy didn't really take off with great popularity until the 1970's domesticated rats have been around since the 1800's. Initially treated as a children's pet, more and more adults are discovering the joys of rat keeping. And contrary to what you might imagine, those of us who love them are not "creepy" Addams family types. Though there may be some who do fit that description, as with the majority of the population, the majority of us are "normal" people like you. To read more about what other rat lovers have to say about their pets, please see my page of testimonials.
