2. William DEARNESS (John¹) was born on 16 Apr 1869 in Tresness, Lady Parish, Sanday, Orkney Islands, Scotland,⁴ died on 11 Sep 1948 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, at age 79,⁵ and was buried on 11 Sep 1948 in Belgian Gardens Cemetery, Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

General Notes: Mr. William Dearness who passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning at the age of 79, had spent 60 years in Townsville. Born at Sanday, in the Orkneys, the late Mr. Dearness came to Townsville with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Dearness, landing here on New Year's Day 1888.
He first worked with the well known blacksmith and wheelwright firm of M.J. Thompson, on the site of the present City Council depot in Odgen Street. Later he worked at the Cleveland and Victoria foundries, finally joining the Railway Department with which he remained until his retirement in 1933.
He was a keen soccer enthusiast, having represented Townsville, and also took a keen interest in rifle shooting, firing on both the old South Townsville range and at Cluden. He was also a prominent member of the Caledonian Society. The widow and five children survive him - Jack, William and Albert, and Mesdames R. Parkes and A. Riddell. The funeral on Saturday afternoon was very largely attended.
