Part 1 Castles in Spain Week 1 Sunday, June 27th, 2005 - Boy, things are happening so fast! "Talk Down 2 Me" was only released a couple of weeks ago and already I'm about to start my European Tour! A lot of credit has to go to my new management, those guys at "Green on Green" really seem to know what they're doing. I'm leaving on a flight for Bilbao (that's Spain to you) tomorrow and my first concert is on Wednesday just down the street from the new Gugenheim. Its like a dream come true. With the miracle of modern technology I'll be able to keep in touch with my fans in North America as I tour across the Great Pond. I'll publish my adventures at the end of every week. Monday, June 28th - I'm on a plane to Spain, hope it doesn't rain! Yeh, everything's cool. I mean, I was hoping that my entourage would be a bit more extensive, I may actually have to do some of the moving of equipment and setting up myself but that's no sweat, I mean, its my first European Tour! Alright! I was a bit surprised to learn there is a class on European flights that's actually below Economy but hey, it's not so bad. A good long walk in Bilbao will help to bring the feeling back into my legs. And I'm Canadian man, I hardly feel the cold. Tuesday, June 29th - I called Larry at G on G to let him know that it was NOT cool that I had to spend half the day looking for my accommodation. It was no small feat even getting into town, the airport is out in the boonies. I was SUPPOSED to have a reservation. And there was SUPPOSED to be a pool. My Spanish isn't too good and when I asked the guy at my Hotel called "Pension de los pobres" (sounds neat anyway) about "agua" (that's water in Spanish) he brought me a glass of it. And it wasn't even cold! Wednesday, June 30th - Where's my crew? I was supposed to be playing tonight and no one has arrived. I called Mo at G on G and he told me that everything's cool, the guys missed their flight but they'll be here by Thursday. I found the place where I'm supposed to be playing. its a small bar really. I spent the first night in there just kind of trying to warm things up with a few jokes. I don't really know Spanish but I tried abit of French. They didn't seem to get it, maybe its my Quebecois accent. The beer and smokes here are dirt cheap which seems to keep everybody happy most of the time. It's like, 3 in the morning and I'm feeling no pain. Thursday, July 1st - Is it possible for "crew" to be singular? This guy comes up to me in the bar this morning and actually speaks English. Says he's here to help me set up for my gig. "Great" I say, "where's the gear?" "Gear?' he says. Come on guys, this is supposed to be a professional tour. I'm in Bilbao, Spain, I need some support here. I did manage to scrape up a few bucks over at what they call " The English Court". Had to compete with some rather agressive gypsies but I did O.K. Rented me a guitar at some little divey place I found and went back to my gig to do some songs. Played "Join the Army" and "Wishing Well". Not much crowd reaction but things were kind of noisy. I really, I mean REALLY need some amplification here to make any kind of an impression. Friday, July 2nd - My roady and me been hangin', seein' some of the sights of Bilbao. John's all right, he even plays a little guitar himself. Things are starting to come together a bit. Turns out this bar (el diablo) even has a sort of sound system which john hooked into. We found another guitar in the back and really started to shake things up towards 10 or so. started out with "Idling" and "Join the Army" but worked our way into some good old rock and roll numbers to really get the crowd going. Saturday, June 19th - Even better tonight than last, I'm calling the first week of my European Tour a big success. Not financially of course and certainly not artistically but in terms of actual survival I'm still here, living in the moment. Till next week.
