She pushed a strand of dark hair from her forehead with the back of her hand. Oil smeared across her skin unnoticed. She tinkered away with the engine block, plugging her tech scanner into every visible port. Standing up, she stretched, cracking her back. She had been leaning over the engine of the old car for far too long, but still it wasn’t right. She sat on the plastic covered front seat and gunned the engine again and again. The noise kept eluding her. She got out again, playing yet another game of hide and seeking with the evasive noise. A screw caught her attention. She could have sworn that she had just tightened that. She looked around her feet for her screwdriver. She checked the work bench, nothing. She emptied the tool box over the bench, rummaging frantically for the screwdriver she had a second ago.
“Now where did I put it?” She looked perplexed. How could a screwdriver disappear?
She knelt down beside the car, checking behind the wheels, under the engine, in her pockets. She had no idea where she had put it. Footsteps behind her startled the techie. She turned to see AlleyKat walking towards her, trying to avoid the greasy mess that was most of the auto-shop.
“Just thought you would like to know that pizza has arrived,” AlleyKat informed her.
“Great, I’ll be out in a few minutes. I just have to find my screwdriver. The car’s being picked up soon…” Serenity trailed off, going back to hunting.
“Want a hand?” AlleyKat asked.
“Em ..”
AlleyKat walked forward and looking Serenity right in the eye, plucked the screwdriver from the hastily formed bun at the back of the techies head. Serenity’s hair tumbled down, cascading over her shoulders.
“Whoops!” Serenity blushed!
AlleyKat smiled, “What would you do without me? Dinner is inside! If you’re not there in five minutes, I’m eating your share!”
Serenity smiled and ducked under the hood again to tighten the rogue screw.
‘That should do it…’
She sat in and gunned the engine one last time.
‘Perfect!’
