Stamped Banners

1. Performance Indicators (Objectives) for the lesson:
Students will be able to: Produce a banner using stamps and tempera paint. Understand concepts of designing a themed banner. Choose a theme for their banner. Use fabric paints to decorate the banners. Follow specific directions and cleanup instructions.

2. Instructional Strategies:
The teacher will: Prepare the banners before class by either sewing them or buying them. Place paint on small trays or paper plates. Set up stations for each stamp theme (one area for fish and one area for stars and moons). Cover work area with newspaper. Mix tempera paint with water to make a wash. Set up stations for paint washes. Demonstrate paint washes and stamping procedures. Tell the students to pick one theme of stamps before they begin. Hand out materials and instruct students to begin paint wash. Supervise and assist the paint wash. Call students up by twos to work with stamps. Supervise and assist stamping. Instruct students to highlight some areas with fabric paint and to lay it in drying area. Write students name and year at the bottom of the banner with permanent marker. After the banners are dry, the teacher will apply glow in the dark fabric paint and highlight some areas. Spray the banners with sparkle spray paint.

3. Assessment Strategies:
The students will demonstrate mastery of the objectives through: projects, design decisions, teacher observation, and cleanup procedures.

4. Adaptive Strategies:
ADAPT strategies will be utilized in lessons: Assistance will be given by the education support team. Complex directions will be simplified and repeated. Eye contact will be made during verbal instructions. Teach at the instructional level. Use IEPs as the basis for adaptation. Preferential seating, teaching to mastery, and independent study. Alternative activities, alternative assignments, acceleration, cooperative learning, and modified assignments. Modified expectations, limited choices and number of questions. Support in classroom from the educational support team, repeated practice with the educational support team, and positive reinforcement will be employed.

5. Materials/ Resources:
scissors, cotton fabric banners (12x6), tempera paint, newspaper, paint brushes, fabric paint tubes (glow in the dark and sparkle colors), water, sparkle spray paint, permanent marker, chunky stamps of different themes (fish, celestial, jungle animals, flowers), paper plates or plastic trays.

6. Procedures:
Preparation: Prepare the banners before class by either sewing them or buying them. Place paint on small trays or paper plates. Set up stations for each stamp theme (one area for fish and one area for stars and moons). Set aside paint brushes with the paint on trays. It is easier to paint the stamps instead of dipping the stamps into the paint. Cover work area with newspaper. Mix tempera paint with water to make a wash. The wash mixture is about one part tempera paint to twenty parts water. Make washes in blue, purple, and green for celestial and fish themes. Make green, brown, and yellow washes for jungle animal and flower themes. Set up stations for paint washes with paint washes in the middle and newspaper covering the areas. Day One: Demonstrate paint washes by wetting the brush often and wash over the fabric. Demonstrate the stamping procedures by painting the stamp with paint and pressing it onto the fabric firmly. Each stamp will be with only one color so as to avoid washing the stamps after each student. Tell the students to pick one theme of stamps before they begin and to make good decisions as to where to position the stamps.
