Design Your Own Shirt
1. Performance Indicators (Objectives) for the lesson:
Students will be able to: Produce a shirt using iron on fabric and fabric paint. Use an electric iron safely. Understand concepts of designing a t-shirt project. Choose one theme for their t-shirt design.
Follow specific directions and cleanup instructions.
2. Instructional Strategies:
The teacher will: Wash t-shirts in cold water and detergent, use no fabric softener. Iron Heat-n-Bond onto fabric and cut out designs. Write the students names on the shirts with a permanent marker. Discuss design concepts and show example of shirt. Demonstrate how to safely use the electric iron and use the fabric paint to trim the iron-on fabric. Call students up to the work area, one at a time, and supervise ironing of fabric onto the shirt. Newspaper will be available to place the shirt on, as a work matt. When the student has completed this, they may take one color of fabric paint to trim the fabric. They may only use one color at a time. If they want to switch colors, they will bring a tube back to the work area. Students will pick up the newspaper and carry it to the designated drying area. The shirts should dry overnight.
3. Assessment Strategies:
The students will demonstrate mastery of the objectives through: projects, design decisions, teacher observation, and cleanup procedures.
4. Adaptive Strategies:
ADAPT strategies will be utilized in lessons: Assistance will be given by the education support team. Complex directions will be simplified and repeated. Eye contact will be made during verbal instructions. Teach at the instructional level. Use IEPs as the basis for adaptation. Preferential seating, teaching to mastery, and independent study. Alternative activities, alternative assignments, acceleration, cooperative learning, and modified assignments. Modified expectations, limited choices and number of questions. Support in classroom from the educational support team, repeated practice with the educational support team, and positive reinforcement will be employed.
5. Materials/ Resources:
scissors, electric iron, cotton t-shirts, Heat-n-Bond, fabric paint (various colors), newspaper, permanent marker, fabric with large objects such as butterflies, reptiles, bugs, fish, etc.
6. Procedures:
Teacher will wash t-shirts with cold water and detergent and dry in a hot dryer. Follow directions on Heat-n-Bond package for ironing it onto the fabric. Cut out interesting areas of the fabric to make iron on fabric designs.
