Here we have the story of one lone Azotochtli, Dixie by name, who is, as far as it can be determined, the last remaining shifter of her kind anywhere.
She was born in the spring of 2001, in a cozy burrow along an arroyo somewhere in the dry plains of west Texas, along with her three identical sisters, Trixie, Pixie and Blossom.  They were a cozy little famly, as is the armadillo way, Pa wasn't around a whole lot.  But when he was he would tell the girls tremendous tales of ancient times when the dinosaurs ruled the earth and the armadillo was a grand and mighty beast.  Dixie remembers falling asleep on more than one occasion to the sound of his singing some nonsensical tune in a strange sounding dialect.
The early days were pleasant ones as the girls nursed and grew, doubling in size quickly.  But as with any small animal, disaster soon struck when one by one Dixie's sisters and mother were picked off by coyotes, rattlesnakes and automobiles.  Pa became concerned, sensing that this litter was perhaps special in that all four had strong indicators of being something more than mere dasypids.  Once mother was gone, he took Dixie into his own burrow and never let her out of his sight.  As she grew, he began to realize that some of the dreams he'd had over the years perhaps were not mere imaginings, and when following a particularly narrow escape from a wiry wolf Dixie woke to find herself curled up outside the burrow, naked and looking like some odd furless bear-like creature, he knew that it was true.  He accompanied her, in her human form to the edge of a reservation, where he instructed her to ask for help, and sadly watched as the girl obediently did as she was bid.
Gaia was watching over Dixie at that time, and had managed to arrange for someone who was patient and kind to find her and look after her.  That was an Uktena Scout by the name of Aurora DreamWeaver.  Aurora came to love Dixie like her own daughter, providing her with clothing and love in the absence of Dixie's own mother.  She sent Dixie to the forest of Necropolis whilst the went on a hunt to find another Azotochtli kin who could serve as a mate and help to bring the near extinct breed back into being.

Dixie's first year as a shifter, particularly in homid was one of wonder and confusion and many many close calls and frights.  She met some interesting changers, survived the anger of the G'roo and the vengeance of some Mokollies.  In particular, she met Ken and John, a pair of bastet that would make the greatest impact on her young life.

Unfortunately for Dixie, one of her biggest problems with living as a human, are the numerous allergies she seems to have whenever in that form.  The ones that have proven most difficult is her allergy to cats - although a well placed atomizer handles that easy enough - and her allergy to tobacco smoke.  One whiff and she's thrown into a sneezing fit that sends her shifting to dasypid without warning!  It's cause a number of close calls!

The feline allergy comes into play following her first mating season, when following "intimate relations" with both cats on separate occasions, she is unable to conceive with the bastet genes in her homid body, and ends up miscarrying her first litter.  It caused her a great deal of grief and disappointment.
And indeed the Mother works in mysterious ways.  In order to ensure that she does not fail again, Dixie enlisted the aid of one Master Chalk.  It was suggested, that since he knows all the "tricks," that he would make a handy mate for the season.  Little did either of them know just what a potentially life changing Business Arrangement that would turn out to be!
