And of course, we could never make a
Volkswagen a Volkswagen without our famous
torsion bar suspension system. We put
torsion bars on the front wheels, and the
back wheels. All four VW wheels are sprung
individually. Here, you see a picture of the front two wheels, along with the front two tempered steel torsion bars. We build each of the front torsion bars with 8 laminated leaves. We use round, solid-steel bars for the back wheels. |
As the VW's wheels move up and down over a bump, each torsion bar twists independently and snaps back quickly to its original shape. (It's just as if you twisted a slat on a metal Venetian blind.) As the torsion bars flex, they unleash their springing power to the wheels. This lets each wheel follow the contour of the road independently. | Also since we make the VW's steering independent of its suspension, road jolts cannot be transmitted to the steering wheel; the wheels can't be jarred off course. | The result is an unusually comfortable ride. Without jolting or bouncing or sliding in your seat. With unusually good control over the roughest roads. |
