Stop Audism!

This website is a designated location for students in Gallaudet University to raise concerns. Because the University seems to prohibit the students from freely expressing themselves, this website provides a place to do so.

STOP AUDISM began as a discussion forum for those who were concerned about issues related to the changes being made in the Television, Photography, and Digital Media (TPDM) department at GU. At this time, the issue of TPDM is still very much alive, but the issue has grown into something greater.

It has grown into a massive body of oppression known as audism. There's nothing sadder than deaf individuals oppressing other Deaf individuals. For better understanding of audism, see Tom Humphries 1975 article, "The Making of a Word : Audism"

Gallaudet Tower Clock Yearbook Issue

Where do you draw the line on freedom of speech, on freedom of the press? When does censorship make sense? When is oppression okay? After a year of hard work, students at Gallaudet University were disappointed to find that the yearbook (Tower Clock 2001) had been confiscated. That was bad enough. To top it off, the administration decided not to communicate their reasons until the Spring semester, and even then, no concrete reasons were given.

This is the most recent incident of oppression on campus. But explore this site and you will find other incidents of audism that are more relevant. We include the yearbook issue because we want the students to have a place to stand up and speak out.

We want to empower students. We want the administration to examine some of the weaknesses of the University that hurt the intellectual future of Deaf students across America. And make changes for the better. One of those issues is AUDISM.
