Movie Madness

Finally, the Autumn semester of 2nd year University gave rise to our first foray into a practical course (the first year was entirely academic). I had chosen to take the Television Studio Production course. Over the three months we would spend on this practical unit, we would quickly learn how to operate various equipment ranging from being a camera operator or floor manager to sound mixer or vision mixer (and of course Director). We would learn how to construct a sequence built on tension, a live studio interview and magazine style current affairs discussion to a demonstration. Finally, we would have to create our very own show from scratch, script it and then shoot it as if it were a real live show.

Our shows were to last 15 minutes, and once you started, you could not stop (unless a serious technical difficulty hampered proceedings as it did in one case in the penultimate week of the course the day we filmed 5 shows back to back from 9am until 6pm). Despite getting rather tired during the process (my personal sleep deprivation the night before led to some behind-camera dancing by the final shows rehearsals), we all highly enjoyed the day of filming it was a great departure from the norm of seminars and screenings.

We worked in teams of two and the show I co-wrote and co-created with Louise Rivett was given a 2.1 grade, which was very pleasing.
Director: Louise; Vision Mixer: Nick (me).
