I was doing my video editing when you were talking about putting targets in the middle of the page.  This is something I really want to learn.  I did the transfer from my zip to the C drive but I had to do it one folder at a time because it would not let me move the whole icon into C, it said unable to copy.  I do not know why.

Chapter 11- Diversity in Child Development and Learning
1996-36% of enrollment in public schools were minorities.
13% of teachers were minority
Teacher must be able to use technology to support learning for special needs (gifted and special disabilities)
There are learning disabled, BEH, speech, many other categories
Introduction
This chapter addresses how technology can address the differences of all children.
There are legally defined groups with even greater special needs.
The number of ESL children is growing.  There are many resources to support learning needs and diversity.
Computer Based Assistive Technology NC Exceptional Children Categories

Dealing with Languages used media and technology to support learning for children whose primary language is not English.
Use media and technology to learn another language at a level sufficient to be able to read and converse and help others with it.

US ed system does not require competency in another language.
Need to at least make students more aware of other languages; legitimate and increase status of those who can speak another language.  Chinese is the most spoken, then Hindi and finally spanish and English.
Can ask students to translate web pages etc.
There are many web sites that teach other languages

NC variation- International school partnerships through technology can be used by any school to encounter another language and another culture.
Western NC
Buncombe county as appr. 850 ESL students

Search another language and add these sites to personal bookmarks
Add International consultant to web site.
Question Ambassadors in the community- link did not work
Ask someone to give you a question that you can work on- Answer needs to be at least a paragraph (may point person to resource to find answer) Bring signed form to class with question (not due next week)
Can be any question.
Bobby web site- search your web site to see if if is appropriate for people with special needs.
To change image table click on image and alt text box type in description of picture.
I really feel that one of the best cures for biases and stereotypes is to work with different people from different cultures.  I felt that I was a pretty balanced person with out very many presupposed beliefs but as I work with people from different races and belief systems, I find that as those presupposed beliefs are being removed that I actually had more than I thought I had.  I really think it is wonderful to work with young children because in so many ways they show the simple beauty of the rainbow culture that we really do live in if we would only take time to value our own multiculturalism.

He wants a good paragraph response that includes where you can find the answer and then my thoughts on the answer.
This needs a check from him, and then I can precede.
Holland do lots of research on several thousand questions a year.
They use the tax dollars to do this.
This year we solved 1241 questions and we have a database of 6000 questions.  This would be an interesting way to address questions if we did this on a yearly bases.
Plowing that skill and process into our community.
Building community relationships is important.  This is my emphasis on the crop site.  The hardest part is getting someone to ask you a question, it takes trust, generally questions we are interested in we don't share with readily.  Publicly acceptable questions, and this can possibly raise other questions.
Community service project part of the work we do as graduate students.
Come back with sheet of paper with the question on it.
This does not have to be applied to the theme of this class.
Give contribution back to that person.
The emphasis is on making a contribution, it may not be an answer.
You are individualizing the curriculum for that community member.
This means you would have a lot of people inputting real community problems.
We can make a real impact.
In doing the project, you can use it for different purposes in your class.
This is a way to deal with multiculturalism of your student.

I felt when I first started teaching very inadequate to deal with the special needs of ESL students who did not have the resources to speak english.  I feel more confident now in my ability to supplement the education of my students, and I feel in a large part this is becauseI have more clear system of how to go about that.

Diversity in Child Learning and Development

This chapter is looking at how technology can serve children with special needs.  The group with really special needs.  Students who speak other languages. Finally there are resources available that support meeting diversity for everyone.  The advantage of cyberspace is that it encourages divergence.  At this point the information age is dominating the economy.       http://www.aeanet.org/ is thelargest trade organization. Teachers need to make their curriculum culturallyrelevant as well as relevant for special needs students because studentsdo not have advocates for cultural education.  "Ladson-Billing's (1994)study of effective teachers of African American children and Reyes, Scribner, and Scribner's (1999) collection of studies of high performing Latino schools.Multiple copies of both works are available in the campus library system.   Information age interaction into this mix including email, web pages, chat and more often depends on grants and support from outside agencies thatputs new technology in the home of such students. A special needs studentmight require a braille reader. An international student might need a website doing automated translation from English to their language.  Ifyou have selected and purchased instructional software and software systems with an eye towards individual needs, you have provided systems that cangive you individualized reports on children's progress and pacing. In 1996,36% of public school enrollment was minority and this number is increasingsteadily. Only 13% of teacher were from minority cultures (1997, U.S. Dept.of Education).

Question Ambassador in the Community

This is a way for students to use technology to help their communities.  Our teachers gain a new tool to address curriculum authenticity, motivation and relevance. The question ambassador collects a question on what the class is studying.  Then the students collect information on questions they believe they can contribute to and they return their contribution in paper form.  Students research and compose responses using the resources of their room, their building library and computer systems, to the degree the computers are connected to the Internet.  Teachers are the control factor and they monitor the students progress.  Students with less technology available can use tag boards and note cards.  This process places a strong emphasis on communication skills that flow from the problem solving process, especially interpersonal communication and writing that is process focused and increasingly computer revised. In time databases can be formed with local questions and this can be a real force for community change.  CROP stands for Communities Resolving Our Problems. CROP supports the question collection and sharing process and provides numerous tools and resources along with training on the use of those tools and resources for the problem solving process.
SUP (Still Unsolved Problems) Database/Engine (IS an advanced way to look at problems and solutions).
Add A New Problem to the SUP database.
Search the SUP database and react to the questions and comments of others.
This link discusses the role of the Question Ambassador (These are more low tech ways for looking at problems and solutions)
Model One: The Question Your Notes procedures support individual inquiry leading to items for sharing.
Model Two: The The The Wonder Web (also called Poster Internet) provides educationally valuable classroom activities suitable for any content area yet simulates core online/Internet systems.
Model Three: Question Ambassadors link classroom and community, increasing the value and status of your school and organization.
In order to make the SUP database more rich with problems any of these groups can increase it: a team of employees, a classroom full of students, a region of student teachers, a group of administrators.
Value for K-12 Students
study technique, research skills development, information technology skill development for students and faculty, motivational technique, public speaking and communication improvement, a community service technique and an important step in the problem solving process building skills for higher order thinking skills exams in fourth and eighth grades in North Carolina

I really enjoyed the closing gap web site.  I learned more in a very short time then I ever though I could learn about disabilities and what can be done to help students that have those disabilities.

Computer Based Assistive Technology

the gifted and talented population and the some fourteen areas of state identified special disabilities.  Below is a web site which purpose is to provide a connection between technology and special education. http://www.closingthegap.com/cgi-bin/lib/libDsply.pl?a=1047&b=1&c=1
This link has many software resources as well as resources for students with special needs.  I was able to integrate a great deal of the information into my advanced competency 13.0.  I read through many of these articles and they are very rich in information on success in implementation of technology with special needs children.

What I gained from this article and the others I read from closing the gap was what a rich resource this web site is as far as providing information about students with disabilities and students with special needs.  I gained a great deal of information for my advanced competencies just from this one web site.

Closing the Gap Article

  • There are many software tools that can be used to help students reclaim their abilities in the classroom.  These are speech feedback, cutting and pasting information, using outlines, and combining text, graphics, sound, and video to improve the products of students with disabilities. (Resource 1)
  • The Magic Wand Keyboard is a miniature computer keyboard, with a built-in mouse, that allows disabled people with limited or no hand/arm movement to fully access any IBM or Apple Macintosh computer. (Resource 2)
  • Students with limited range of movement can use a track ball and on-screen keyboard.  They can also uses a finger point to access their communication books, and adaptive hardware and software to access the computer. They can uses a light pointer to select items, as well as read along, from charts on the wall. (Resource 1)
  • Students with Marfan Syndrome, have obstacles because they fatigueseasily and are unable to write legibly.  One of the options is to get a  laptop computer  to complete written work. Students can then use the wordprocessor to make a standard written reports. There are also graphics capabilitiesin ClarisWorks and the Macintosh OS, that help to make  polished and professionallooking research papers. (Resource 1)

When I had a spanish speaking child, I felt frustrated because the school did not have text books to give this child.  I feel like the first step to having a classroom that is sensitive to the multicultural needs is to have a way to obtain text books for children.  When I went to the media center to look for resources they mainly had picture books which is not sufficient to meet the needs of a ninth grade student.  I was told that the translators were poor on the internet, and the spanish teacher did translate some of the material for him.  I felt bad because as a new teacher on many levels I felt powerless to help this student.  I feel I will explore this area more, and that next time I am in the same situation I can at least feel more confident that I was able to provide some assistance

Dealing with Languages

http://www.globalenglish.com/
This is a site to help people learn to speak English.

The other web sites were not found and the links were bad, but I will check with Yahoo directly and see if I can find them another way.

This link is to raise awareness regarding resources and issues of multiple languages found in our world.  It is important that students have awareness of other Languages, and if it can be emphasized by the teacher then students will follow suit.
The following languages are the most influential languages in the world and would expand kids knowledge if exposed to them.
  • Mandarin Chinese, 863 million
  • Hindi (India), 357 million
  • Spanish 352 million
  • English 335 million
  • Bengali (India, Bangladesh) 200 million
One way to differentiate learning for students that speak other languages is to have them translate web pages in the language the know.
The state has a special program for language development at
http://www.ga.unc.edu/NCCIU/ispt/

There are 37,251 students in North Carolina have limited English proficiency.  This means there is at least one in every classroom.
