Lesson Six: The Voyage Home

2. Objectives

• Standard Course of Study Goal English I:
  

• 1.02 Respond reflectively (individually and in groups) to a variety of expressive texts (e.g., memoirs, vignettes, narratives, diaries, monologues, personal responses) in a way that offers an audience: 

• The learner will show a personal reaction to the text with a sense of how that comes from careful consideration of the text. (Journals)
  

• 2.02 Explain commonly used terms and concepts that:
  

• classify the terms and identify distinguishing characteristics. (Vocabulary)
• organize ideas and details effectively (KWL Chart and Notes)
• 5.02 Demonstrate increasing comprehension and ability to respond personally to texts by exploring the genre of the epic. (Reading)
• 6.01 Demonstrate an understanding of conventional written and spoken language (Grammar Lesson)
  

 
• Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:
  
• 5.02  Produce media in various formats such as multimedia.  (Three students can work on computer web project while class participates in lesson.)
  5.06  Apply fair use copyright guidelines (Copyright Law, P.L. 94-553) in all projects.
  
   
• This lesson is an recall lesson because students are being introduced to new vocabulary words, and they are remembering  grammar rules put in place on Friday. Students are to take the information they have gained so far what they know and are going to make inferences into what they want to know and what they will learn.  Students will practice reading comprehension and take notes to update their notebooks on where we are in relationship to the Odyssey.  Differentiated learning will take place because three students will be working on the computer their web assignment while class is participating in lesson.
• Materials being used are Student journals, New Vocabulary List, Large sheet of white paper for KWL chart, Markers and pencils, Textbook Elements of Literature, Overhead, Overhead markers, clean overhead sheets, Grammar worksheets and overhead, and Classroom computer and sign up sheet.
  

3. Guided Practice

• KWL Chart students gather what they know, what they want to know, and what they will learn for the coming week.
• Read pages 911-913  The Witches Circle after teacher input in the Grammar Lesson.
  

4. Teacher Input

• Grammar Lesson on Diagramming and or Parts of Speech.
• Teacher Input- teacher reveals important ideas and literary devices that are a need to know for students.  Discuss what has been read so far in terms of literary terms and main themes.  This will be done after reading has been completed.
  

5. Independent Practice

• Students will use this time to define vocabulary or catch up on work that they are behind on so they can begin the week fresh.  Students finish grammar.
  

6. Closure

• Go over objectives of the day. 
• Today we have been exposed to our new vocabulary words.
• Today we have explored what we know and what we are going to learn this week.
• Today we have strengthened our knowledge of sentence structure and parts of speech.
• Today we have gained comprehension on the reading of the Odyssey.
• Today we used differentiated learning by having some students work independently on their web sites.
• Informal Question and Answer time with Students
