Lesson Four: The Voyage Home
1. Focus and Review
- Journal Time based on yesterday's question of the day.
- Discussion of journals in class.
2. Objectives
- Standard Course of Study Goal English I:
- 1.01 Narrate personal experience that offer an audience (student poem)
- 2.02 Explain commonly used terms and concepts that classify
terms and identify distinguishing characteristics. Organize ideas and
details effectively.
- 3.02 Express an informed opinion that states clearly a personal view (journals)
- 5.01 Read and analyze Literary works by using effective reading strategies for engagement.
- Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:
- 5.02 Produce media in various formats such as multimedia.
(Three students can work on computer web project while class participates
in lesson.)
5.06 Apply fair use copyright guidelines (Copyright Law, P.L. 94-553) in all projects.
- This lesson is an comparison lesson because we are looking at the the similarities and differences between two poems.
- Materials needed are student Journals, Textbook Elements of Literature,
Overhead, Overhead pens, Clean Overhead Sheets, student notebooks, Venn Diagram
overhead, paper, pencils, and a place to go outside. Also we need the
classroom computer with sign up sheet.
3. Guided Practice
- Read 890-898 as a group, Part One and Calypso.
4. Teacher Input
- Through a Venn Diagram work on comparison skills with students by comparing
the similarities and differences of the epic and the poem Calypso.
5. Independent Practice
- Take students outside and have them write their own poem using personification.
- Differentiated learning is available because the computer will have
three students working in thirty minute time slots on the computer.
This will enable the whole class to use the classroom computer as students
rotate on a class list.
6. Closure
- Go over objectives of the day.
- Today we have read and gained an understanding of the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer.
- Today we have strengthened our comparison skills using a Venn Diagram.
- Today we will have explored personification through writing.
- Today we have practiced differentiated learning by allowing three
students to work independently on their web projects while the class does
their lesson.
- Informal Question and Answer time with Students
- Question of the Day and your journal question for tomorrow is:
- Inference: Would you choose home over the company of a God or Goddess? Why or Why not?
This Lesson Plan represents a basic outline of what will be covered during
the Fourth day. As with any lesson, this is a work in progress and
will be altered as need arises. All ideas present come from many years
of study as a college student and working professional, any thoughts expressed
here came from my brain and the knowledge I have gained.
