Standard Course of Study Goal English I:

The student will be able to clearly state the subject to be defined
and be able to classify terms and identify distinguishing characteristics

about those need
5.02 Produce media in various formats such as multimedia.
(Three students can work on computer web project while class participates
in lesson.)
5.06 Apply fair use copyright guidelines (Copyright Law, P.L. 94-553) in all projects.
This lesson is an comparison lesson because we are looking and taking
components we know about two poems and looking at similarities and differences.
This also helps students make inferences about epithets as they create their
own, they will draw conclusions about the structure of an epithet..
Materials needed are student Journals, SUP board, Textbook
Elements of Literature, Overhead, overhead pens, Clean Overhead Sheets, overhead with literary pictures, student
notebooks, white paper, colored pencils, markers, poster board, and classroom computer with
sign up sheet, Outside place for afternoon activity.
3. Teacher Input
Notes from the teacher, update the students on what we should have so
far in our notes on the epic. It is also a way for the teacher to bring
up the literary terms and show students pictures that help students
integrate these ideas. In this way students have the information needed
in note form for test time. This is a good discussion time and can
be used to evaluate student knowledge.
4. Guided Practice
Read 932-934 as a group, The beggar and the faithful dog, Penelope to Odysseus
Venn Diagram compares poems similarities and differences.
5. Independent Practice
Students use their time to write and identify epithets.
Homework- bring in a newspaper article that uses an epithet
6. Closure
Go over objectives of the day.
Today we have made connections between our reading and the literary devices of Language Arts.
Today we read and worked on understanding, The Odyssey by Homer.
Today we made visual connections as we connected pictures to literary terms.
Today we gained comparison skills between two poems.
Today we used differentiated learning by having some students work independently on their web sites.

Question of the Day and your journal question for tomorrow is:
Comparison- Compare and Contrast the section on The
beggar and the faithful dog and the poem Penelope to Odysseus? How are these
poems the same and how are they different?
This Lesson Plan represents a basic outline of what will be covered during
the Thirteenth day. As with any lesson, this is a work in progress and
will be altered as need arises. All ideas present come from many years
of study as a college student and working professional, any thoughts expressed
here came from my brain and the knowledge I have gained.
