| On Hallowe'en night I was "treated" to an amazing guitar extravaganza at the Black Swan. The regular Tuesday night jam is hosted by guitar virtuoso Dylan Wickens, John Bouvette (the very professional drummer for Tony Springer) and Brent Kehoe on bass. Brent was unavailable that night and a lad named Gunther ably filled in for him. Being the proud owner of Dylan's debut CD of mostly original tunes, "Highway Audio Fire", I could have made a good bit of money bottlegging it, as he is currently out of stock! Interesting technical sound effect on the vocals for B.B. King's "Catfish Blues". Dylan's special guest that evening was "Count" Ernest Lee (don't call me "Ernie"!). Ouch - a vampire bite, for sure! An extreme guitar talent in his own right he was joined on stage with Dylan and a third lead guitarist, Johnny Humour, and Denis Roy on drums. Jimmy Page would have been impressed with Ernest's rendition of "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?" Joining Dylan for the third set were Michael Sachter on harmonica and Rob Heemstra (playing an awesome Les Paul Double-Cut Gibson!) on covers of "Matchbox" (covered on Jonny Lang's first CD) and "Route 66", Rob has recently produced a CD for a friend named Roger Brunning, called "Scintilla". I'll be checking that one out in the near future. Karen Lee "Wilde Childe", a former jam hostess at this venue, performed Aretha Franklin's "Chain, Chain, Chain" and was accompanied on guitar by Sugar Plum Croxen (whose autobiography, "Coast to Coast in Canada" is due for imminent release) and Rick Girouard on drums. Topping off the roster of jammers was "White Russian" Alex Andrusevich, who performed an original tune with a decidedly "Latin/rhumba/samba" beat to it. Apparently it was slated to be included in the soundtrack for a film called "Seagulls on the Hudson", but the film deal unfortunately fell through. Watch for other special guests joining Dylan at the Tuesday jam, including Jack de Keyzer, in December 2000. By D.D. Rocker |
