“What do you mean
you have to leave?”
Justin grabbed his stuff off the chair
and put his coat on. “Our manager needs to go over some last minute details
of the tour,” he said.
Elizabeth followed him to the door
and stepped out with him. She wanted to beg him to stay, but she stopped
herself knowing this was bound to happen anyways since he would be leaving
in four days.
“Bye.”
He turned to her and smiled. “I'll
call you later.”
“Okay.”
“I love you.” He kissed her quickly.
Before she could say it back to him, he was gone.
She was about to go back into her apartment
when she heard someone calling her name. She turned around. Knowing it wasn't
Justin, she looked at the figure.
Oh no, not him again!
“What are you doing here?” she snapped.
He stepped forward and laughed at her.
“Someone not in a good mood? It must be hard, your boyfriend picking his
career over you.”
“Oh shut up. What do you want anyways?
Wait, let me guess. You're gonna tell me your identidy?” Elizabeth said.
The cold look him didn't seem to affect
him at all. He walked into her apartment. She didn't have time to argue.
“Lovely place you got here,” he said,
looking around the room, particularly at the pictures of her and Justin together
that were scattered on the mantle.
She was getting annoyed. Couldn’t he
just tell her what he wanted from her?
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
He sat on the couch looking up at Elizabeth,
who was standing in the corner of the living room. “You really want to know
who I am? Really badly?”
“Yes! You've been following me for
days and you claim that I know you, but who are you?”
The man slowly and carefully removed
a wig from his head.
She almost cried when she saw who it
was. She made her way over to him but didn't stand too close to him.
“Surprised?” he asked her.
“I....I can't believe it's you!”
He smiled at her, as if nothing had
ever happened. “I've missed you so much.”
She stared down at his left hand. “Where's
your wedding ring?”
He walked over to her and engulfed
her into his arms. “We got divorced a while ago. I finally realized that
we weren't meant to be, that my true love was the one I gave up.”
She couldn't believe her ears. He had
to say this now! Just when she had fallen in love again. Then she remembered
Justin. Yes, she still cared for Thomas, but Justin was her one and only,
he was her soulmate, she was sure of it. She tried to ignore Thomas' last
comment, but it couldn't escape her mind.
She sat on the couch to try to gather
her thoughts. “What do you mean?” She looked up at him.
Thomas sat beside her, not being able
to bare it any longer. “I've missed you so much. I came back for a second
chance with you. I love you.”
Gee, why wasn‘t she surprised?
“Don't.” Elizabeth got up, not wanting
to hear any more. She felt her whole body shaking at this recent disturbance.
“You can’t just come here and expect…”
He kissed her but she pushed him away.
It took a little pressure, but she managed to do it before the kiss got too
far.
“Oh come on. Can you really say you
love that jerk more then you ever loved me?” Thomas said.
“Yes actually I can. I'm over you,
I've moved on to someone better.”
“Oh please! We were together for four
years. Don’t try and tell me he treats you better then I did.”
“Just drop it, okay? God! You married
my best friend for Christ sakes,” Elizabeth said, her voice getting a little
louder.
“I'm sorry,” he said, reaching over
and touching her hand, which she pulled away from his reach. “Why can't you
just give me a chance to prove how much I love you?”
“Because I don't love you anymore,
that's why,” she said sharply.
He shrugged as if that weren’t true.
“You don’t know. You might.”
“I don’t.”
“Because you're in love with singing
boy?”
“I don't think, I know!” she snapped.
“Fine whatever. Just all I'm asking
is a chance please.” Thomas was practically begging. He was all but on his
hands and knees.
“If you want to see me at all, you'll
be my friend, nothing more.”
“Alright. I can deal with that for
now,” Thomas said.
“You’re going to have to deal with
that forever.”
“We'll see about that.” Thomas gave
her a kiss on the cheek then left her apartment, leaving Elizabeth standing
there, not knowing what to think about what had just happened.
---A Few Hours Later---
Elizabeth was in deep thought thinking
about Thomas when the phone rang. She reached over and picked it up, her
hands still a little unsteady.
“Hello?”
“Hey baby.”
“Oh hey, how's it going?” She had to
make sure he couldn't tell something was wrong. He was getting very good
at reading her mind.
“Pretty good. How was your day?”
“It was okay.” She fiddled with the
fork in her hand.
“Miss me?”
“Of course, did you miss me?”
He smiled over the phone. “Always.
You busy tomorrow?”
“I don't think so, why?” She wondered
what was up his sleeve this time.
“It's a surprise, I can't tell you.
Can I pick you around 10?”
“Sure that's fine. Are you going to
give me a clue about what this is about?”
“Nope.”
She pouted. Now how was she supposed
to sleep?
“I didn’t think so,” she said. “What
are you doing right now?”
“Talking to you,” he said, but then
he got serious. “Just sitting in front of the TV watching some boring rerun
of ‘Cheers.’”
Sounded better then what she was doing.
“What are you doing?” he asked when
she didn’t say anything.
“Just reading.”
Medical journals, no doubt, he thought.
“Well then I'm really glad I called.
I missed you all day and couldn't get a spare minute to call you till now,”
he said.
“I bet you’re getting excited.”
“About the tour? Oh yeah I can't wait.
Except.…”
“Except what?”
“I don't want to leave you. I really
feel bad about having to.”
“I'm getting extra hours at the hospital.
Besides we still have the phone.”
“And I'm going to call you everyday.”
She hesitated. “It's getting kinda
late, I'll see you tomorrow.”
“I love you,” he said before he hung
up, not giving her the chance to say it back, but he knew she loved him too.
“I love you too,” she said after she
hung the phone up and stared at the ceiling.
