Derek's 1997 Jeep XJ

Custom Front Bumper

  • 6" x 2" x 0.25" carbon steel rectangular tube
  • 2" schedule 80 carbon steel pipe
  • 1" carbon steel rod
  • Tig welded

Modifications

After I installed the Powertrax No-Slip in the rear end, I started climbing in the rocks a lot more. After a few trips through the rocks, I hit my bumper a lot on both sides in front of the tires. I needed more clearance, so i trimed the sids of the bumper to 2" and then tapered the front from the bumper mounting brackets where it is 6" to the edge where it is 2". The following pictures show the modifications.

Finished Product

The final modification was to add the winch mounting plate to the bumper. Brian made a winch mounting plate according to the Warn instructions, and then cut out a section of the rectangular tube in the middle of the bumper. About 1/2" of tube was left at the bottom to retain the integrity of the bumper, and then the winch mounting plate was welded on top. Finally, the winch was installed.

If you like this bumper, feel free to contact Brian VanHyfte. Brian is interested in making bumpers for all of you XJ owners out there! Trust me, there's no better feeling than knowing your XJ has something different than every body else's, and a custom bumper is a great place to start!
