But, of course, I DO know that Someone is out there. I KNOW. There IS a God.
Think these words, not to yourself, but send the thoughts out: "God? Are You there? DO You exist? You promised if I searched for You, I'd find You. Ok. So I'm taking You at Your Word. I'm searching. For You. You said that if I came close to You, that You would come close to me. I'm giving it a shot. Ok. Are You there?"
You don't need to go into any special posture. You don't have to drop to your knees in a room crowded with people. You don't have to throw up your hands, or go to a shrine, or a temple, or a synagogue. God is waiting for you, right now, wherever you are. You can close your eyes, or you can leave them open. You can whisper your words, or merely think them.
He can hear you. And wherever You are, He is waiting for you. Right now.
Say, or think (the words don't have to be memorized, or any exact wording, in any specific language, or in a sing-song chant): "You said I could call You FATHER. I'd like that. If You are God, and You exist, and You want to know me -- I'm interested. I'd like to get to know You. But You must help me, because I don't know how, and there are so many tricksters, liars and salesmen out there, I'm only going to do this at Your leading, if You lead me."
If you're sitting in front of a computer at work, or in a dark bedroom, or have stumbled here at the public library, it doesn't matter. Not where you are, or who you are, or how much money you have, or what you have done in your life. God wants to know you. Give Him a chance.
Maybe you want to wait until later, when you can find a private bathroom stall, or a quiet room. Or, sometimes you are the most alone when you are riding on a bus, or in the back of a taxi, or when you have a long drive to make.
Reach out to Him -- He will reach back.
