History:
Skye was born at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Her father, Colonel James Pierce, a military historian, was a curator at the Air Force Museum. Her mother, Elise Pierce, was a stay-at-home mother to Skye and her two older brothers, James, Jr. and Tracy.
When Skye was eight, the family moved to Colorado Springs so that her father could take a position as a history professor at the United States Air Force Academy. The children all loved life in Colorado. They attended public primary schools and then went to Air Academy High School, a public high school on the grounds of the Air Force Academy. Skye ran Cross-country in high school, and in her free time became an avid climber and skier (later switching to snowboarding when it became popular). Colonel Pierce also taught all his children how to handle rifles, shotguns and handguns (though not larger automatic weapons).
After they graduated, both of her brothers attended the Air Force Academy and entered active duty service. Currently, James is a helicopter pilot and Tracy is a cryptographer. Although her father would have been proud to have his daughter choose a military career, Skye instead attended Princeton University. Her original intention was to study sports medicine, but during her undergraduate studies she changed to trauma medicine. Part of the motivation for this choice was an accident her brother James suffered while flying a rescue mission. It took several skilled surgeons to save her brother's life, using cutting-edge techniques not available even a year before. She decided then that she wanted to be a trauma surgeon, not only performing surgery, but helping develop the kind of methods that made the difference between life and death for critically injured patients. The year of her brother's injury and rehabilitation was difficult for their family. Skye threw herself into her new program of study and graduated with honors.
After graduating from Princeton, Skye went to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she enrolled in a combination MD/PhD program. She completed her residency at the Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, then went on to a staff position at Cherry Point Naval Hospital, serving Cherry Point Naval Air Station and Cherry Point Marine Air Corps Station, as well as emergency cases from surrounding military installations such as Fort Bragg, NC. Skye felt that her work at Cherry Point was valuable, but with the increasing hostilities all over the world she began to under if she couldn't make more of a difference. She left Cherry Point to work for Doctors Without Borders, an independent, non-profit organization that delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, as well as caring for populations suffering from endemic diseases and neglect. Skye spent eight years in Africa, using her skills in ways she had never imagined. She has also learned some other necessities of living in a hostile climate, including bush survival. In addition to her formal Western medical training, Skye has an interest and some skill in Chinese medicine and has studied the traditional remedies of Africa, focusing on ways to help people that do not rely on expensive packaged pills and chemical pharmacology.
Skye was recruited for the SGC by a friend of her father's at the Pentagon.
Personality:
In a word, Skye is driven. That trait has both positive and negative connotations. On one hand, she finishes what she starts. On the other, it can cause her to focus on a task to the exclusion of other important issues. She also has a well-developed sense of justice, championing the weak and the underdog when she sees the need. Despite these intense aspects to her personality, Skye is also a remarkably pleasant person, enjoying jokes and good times with friends. She tends to resolve intense emotions (e.g., anger, sorrow) through equally intense physical activity. She is cool in stressful situations, seeming to have the ability to store up her negative feelings for later resolution. Skye is internally motivated, and seems to need little praise from her superiors
