History:

Rusty, as she prefers to be called, was born in Key West Florida late in life to two retired AF officers Mary and Patrick Marshall. She grew up their only child half on a boat, half on the islands of the Lower Keys through out her entire childhood. There wasn't a weekend that wasn't passed diving or fishing or boating with her friends and family.

She enrolled in the Air Force's ROTC program while attending the University of Miami. She had always had very determined dreams of following in her parent's footsteps and leading a life as ideal as she always thought theirs were. High grades and compelling personality got her the first few steps towards making those dreams a reality. But her path dipped a bit to the left where their's had always been a straight steady line of quiet service.

Physical sciences and mathematics were at the top of her study cue. She earned a master's degree in Physics a few years later at the Air Force Intermediate Service School. Rusty opted to follow an unusual course and take up the reins as a test pilot there in sunny Alabama. Where the excitement did her good, it severely taxed her relationship with then fiance Gary Patterson, Jr. She had no intention of backing off of the program until she found that she was carrying Gary's child.

Switching back into low gear Rusty and Gary were married almost immediately. She left the pilot's chair for more officer's training and a promised role as instructor in California. On August 11, 1993 Charles Patrick Patterson was born. Shortly after his birth the strain between Rusty and Gary had grown to where it couldn't be ignored. Both wanted something different, both needed more support. So the marriage amicably was ended and custody of the baby was awarded to Rusty.

In 1995 Rusty requested to be transferred to Eglin AFB where her parents could be close enough to help her with raising her son. She had no trouble getting in on the 46th Test Wing thanks to her experience at Maxwell AFB on her papers. Though it proved difficult trying to raise her son, hold her career on a good path and still maintain a good relationship with Gary.

January of 2004 brought a load of heartbreak to ring in the new year with: Charlie decided to go live with his father (who was stationed at Kadena AFB in Japan). The custody was flip-flopped and she was left with an empty home. It took about two months of going stir crazy before Rusty threw her name into the hat to transfer to another test group.

Instead of heading back to Maxwell or another similar site she was grabbed up by the SGC for a more unique form of utilizing her talents.

Personality:

Practical, earthy and rooted: those are words that most of her peers would use to describe her on a regular basis. She likes to keep a very ordered life all set in tidy rows so when things do cave or go awry she knows where to pull it back together from. Her home is a near duplicate of her work place, only with a more relaxed air to it and a hell of a lot more sporting equiptment.

She prefers basic to fancy, serviceable to frills, strong to feminine, honesty to kindness. Rusty's sense of humor is often fickle, but when she laughs it's infectious. However ordered she can be, Patterson knows that there has to come a time when everything comes falling down and all hell must break loose. Therefore she hosts regular meltdowns to avoid the big ones and makes a party out of the 'scheduled psychiatric vacations' and invites most of her friends.

She tends to be amused more than shocked, a bit of a thrill seeker and a hard headed pain in the rear if she sets her mind on it. An inner bit of quirkiness creeps into everything she does- from the strange colors she tends to favor in her off duty life to the almost smile she tends to adopt but tucks back with equal parts of aloofness and mischief.

Her parents are very dear and close to her still, as is her son- though the two rarely see eye to eye. He seems to think of her as some kind of derranged ex-hippie and she simply can't conform to the emo/laptop/game world that he exists in. Add in the impending marriage between Gary- who still blames all their troubles on Rusty for 'changing'- and his new barbie doll model Hayley and you have a small disaster waiting to happen.
