In most Venturing discussions that I've watched discussing getting a crew to bond together, the answer seems to return to making sure that the crew has some focus or specialty. This provides a common thread for all of the youth who belong or participate. In an LDS crew, all priests are strongly encouraged to participate, and this can create a crew with a wide variety of interests and even some youth who would prefer not to attend. LDS general leadership have directed that LDS crews do not create specialties (in the sense of a particular focus of activities).
However, I believe that the crew should rally around the standard of Priesthood Venturing, in that the specialty the crew uses is Venturing in order to Fulfill the Duty to God. By this, I don't mean that the purpose is to work through the requirements of Duty to God. Instead, I mean that the crew take seriously the direction of planning mutual activities (through Venturing) that accomplish priesthood purposes and provide experiences in the four development areas/six experience areas discussed earlier. As such, the crew can select a wide variety of activities, including high adventure, sports, arts, hobbies, etc., with a purpose of achieving a broader, long-lasting goal. Thus, LDS crews would be Youth Ministry crews of a very LDS flavor.
Just as Venturing is designed around acknowledging the ability of youth to determine their own future, and recognizing their accomplishments, I think that LDS Venturing should acknowledge the ability of priests to take the gospel seriously (enough) to plan activities around experiences to accomplish specific purposes.
