Aaronic Priesthood Scouting
Philosophies of One Adult Leader
Why I made this site:
In 1997, I started my first experience with being an adult leader of a
Boy Scout group in a ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. In church units, called wards, of the Church of Jesus Christ in
the United States, leaders are instructed to have Boy Scout groups for
each age group of boys and young men, from the age of 8 until 16, and they
are encouraged for the young men 16-18. Because of the way that everything
was organized when I began, I struggled a great deal trying to understand
the wisdom of using Scouting. I just couldn't see how and when and where
the Boy Scout programs were intended to join forces with the religious
instruction with which the Church seemed to need to focus on.
Through a variety of experiences, transitions, and interactions with
a number of other people, I'm feeling as though I have the start of a rational
philosophy justifying the symbiotic relationship between the Boy Scouts
of America and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I
am hoping that I can provide some resources that will
-
Provide a religious context for Scouting
-
Explain why Scouting works
-
Promote the use of Varsity and Venturing programs
I will not really try to make any comments regarding Cub Scouting, although
I think many of the same philosophical comments probably still apply. This content is an active blog: http://360.yahoo.com/dbrianwalton, organized here for your convenience.
