Older Updates

A list of the changes I've made around here

I've decided to start keeping track of my changes, mostly for my own interest...

  • Tuesday, 23 September 2003 - Finished my last C assignment, now for the exam in 4 weeks time...urghhh...I wonder if they'll award me exam points for getting my name right on the paper...anyway, found these cool Plastic AB's and thought others might like to have a look as well...

  • Wednesday, 10 September 2003 - Uploaded a summary of The Battle for the Valley With No Name, a 100 AP DBM game that I fought a couple of weeks back with Dave Wallace; also added some comments by Mike Campbell to my Cabots page.

Updates this year are likely to be fairly few and far between - we're no longer allowed to take coffee out of the staff room to our desks, so I won't be doing much on the site from work (which is how I did the vast majority of it 'till now). Also I'm starting an Extra Mural paper from Massey University, so between that, family and Canterbury Miniatures I might be a little stretched for time...we'll see how we go...

  • Tuesday, 9 April 2002 - Just got a note from Duncan Head to point out a small error in my Latin Grammar...

"Principes", which is the plural of princeps, is indeed pronounced "prinkipays".
    Thanks Duncan!

  • Thursday, 4 April 2002 - Finally added some scans to Stephen Montague's review of Italeri's Romans. Yeah, I know they're old news now, but...now I can try and find that missing Livonian box scan!

Was good to meet some of you fellas in the weekend too. Word of advice - don't send your Camels anywhere near your opponent's Bows!

  • Thursday, 28 March 2002 - Still working on some other stuff, but I have just got in my first shipment of Zvezda Livonian Kinghts, so I've started a wee review (box scans only at the moment); also working on a 20mm catalogue of the stuff I can get hold of for Canterbury Miniatures.

By the way, did you know that Princeps is actually pronounced "Prink-e-pays"?! I didn't till a friend who's done a bit of Latin pointed it out! Likewise Velites is pronounced "Welle-tays". That's news to this boy, who has trouble enough just trying to manage English!

See you at the Nat's in the weekend! (Casual gaming - I just haven't got enough figures painted for a comp!)
  • .

Ok, to start off the year, got a new tip on glue designed for plastic from Ken Gordon, a link to History in Miniature, an exceedingly good idea from a teacher in the States, and I've done just a couple of minor changes to my 100AP DBM Rules.

  • 21 November, 2001 - Work proceeds apace (admitedly at quite a slow pace!) with my Punic Command reviews, but in the meantime, if you would care to avert your eyes to the top of the page...cool eh?! Courtesy of Mike Hansen, Outlaw Productions, Auckland, here in En Zed. Very nice. Thanks Mike.

  • 9 November, 2001 - A slight amendment in the file paths - Stan Walker, one of the few people on the planet who are still using Netscape (! :-)), has pointed out that NS don't understand what I'm asking it to do! Works fine with IE! Lets try this again...

A quick preview - Mark Ottley has just finished painting some of the HaT Punic Command test shots that I recently received. Davidicus himself (reference to my recent battle reports), Cart bearing the Standard, Cart bearing the Sacred Cow, Polybius, Roman showing the Flag. Review to follow...

  • 2 November, 2001 - Finally! Finished my latest battle report - The Second Battle for West Melton. Over 25 html files involved in this one...which is why it took so jolly long!

  • 31 October, 2001 - Still pretty busy with real life stuff, but I have managed to update my DE BELLIS LUDIS CUM HOMUNCULIS MOLLIBUS for sale page with some new stock, a price reduction and a special sale!

  • 12 October, 2001 - Updated Stephen Montague's review of Italeri's Gallic Infantry for DBA 2.0. I'd also like to bring attention to his review of Italeri's Roman Infantry - I've been meaning to add scans to it, but so far...

  • 4 October, 2001 - Been kinda busy lately, what with hospital and all, but I have finally got round to posting David Wallace's pickies in the gallery. Gallic infantry, Gallic cavarly, Poybian Roman cavalry, Polybian Hastati and Priceps, Polybian Triari, Polybian Velites, Polybian Baggage, Cart Spearmen, Cart Elephants, Spanish Infantry and Numidians. Still working on the latest battle report.

  • 20 September, 2001 - Added some more comments to the Zvezda Persian Infantry scans, this time headed up by Graham Greenaway; also added some scans of HaT's Hoplites.

  • 12 September, 2001 - My thoughts and prayers (as well as those of many Kiwi's I'm sure) go out the US after such shocking terrorist attacks early this morning NZ time.

  • 11 September, 2001 - Umm, not so much of an update, rather a 'service announcement'...just got this from GeoCities...

Congratulations, http://www.geocities.com/dbplastic is very popular and has been receiving a large amount of traffic. Your site has become so popular, in fact, that our records indicate that you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide for a free web site, which is 3GB/month (measured on an hourly basis). [Hah! Who would have thought?!]

In the past we have not enforced that limit, so your site has been uneffected thus far. However, shortly, all free member sites transferring more than the allowable data limit will be disabled for portions of the day until usage falls to within the prescribed limits.
Since the solution that they have offered would cost me at least $US 8.95 a month (that's $NZ 22.95...stink!! That's more than I pay my ISP!)...sorry fellas, but we may have to put up with some inconvenience 'till I can figure out some way around it!

  • 10 September, 2001 - Added some scans of Alexander's Phalangites (with a quite nifty trick for their pikes from Andy Dempster here in En Zed); also added some comments about HaT's Thracians and Alexander's Light Infantry by Ken Gordon in the UK.

  • 3 September, 2001 - Added some more comments about Zvezda's Persian Infantry Scans by Ken Gordon and Stan Walker.

  • 28 August, 2001 - Added another scan those of Zvezda's Macedonian cav. This time it's of their stat's sheet that you get in the new boxes for their Age Of Battles game.

  • 22 August, 2001 - And now for your viewing pleasure...The Battle for West Melton.

  • 20 August 2001 - Ken Gordon has sent some comments to add to my scans of Zvezda's Macedonian Cavalry; I've added some new HaT's 8043 Alexander's Phalangites and 8045 Greek Mercenary Hoplites to the plastic lists on my DE BELLIS LUDIS CUM HOMUNCULIS MOLLIBUS for sale page; and I'm still working on my latest battle report

  • 7 August 2001 - Started on the report of the battle that Dave and I had - The Battle for West Melton. It's been pointed out to me that my previous title may have had unfortunate connoatations...!

  • 31 July 2001 - Last in the series of Dave's pickies - one last shot of the Roman war machine. I'll have to start working the rest of the unposted shots into a battle report. I may be some time!

Also on a slightly subdued note...the demise of the SmallScale Military Miniatures Enthusiasts Web Ring. John-Michael Murray has had difficulty finding the time to maintain it (I'm sure we can all relate - my huge pile of unpainted figures speaks testimony to that!) and has regretably had to close the ring down. Many thanks to John for his work. Pitty how real life tends to get in the way!

  • 30 July 2001 - Today...more Polybian infantry and cavalry. And very many thanks to all those who brought figures off Canterbury Miniatures (hah, finally got most of the plastic listed!!) in Christchurch's annual Wagamers Bring and Buy this last weekend. All donations gratefully received!!

  • 26 July 2001 - And up next in the series of David's pickies we have...a fine selection of the Roman war machine and Polybian Viletes

  • 24 July 2001 - Next in the series of David's pickies...Spaniards and Cart Spear

  • 23 July 2001 - Here's another couple shots of Dave's Carts - Elephants and Horse. I'll have to feed these in over the next couple of days, as I'm doing it all during my breaks at work!

  • 20 July 2001 - Added some new conversion tips from John Koziol; also uploaded some pickies of David Wallace's Polybian Roman and Later Carthaginian 20mm Plastic DBA armies taken during a game he and I had a couple of days back.

'Twas close, but once he got into the Cart's infantry, it was all over!. Yet to actually work a Battle Report out of them, or to place them in the Gallery proper, but for the time being...Polybian baggage elements, Numidians, Celt Cav, Celt Warband and the fight for the east flank. How did his Cv stand up to my El for so long...? It seemed like such a good idea at the time!

  • 11 July 2001 - Added some scans of Zvezda's Persian Cavalry; also got in some Italeri Roman Infantry to sell.

  • 29 June 2001 - Added a link to Painted Toy Soldiers by fellow Kiwi Andy Gorman (have a look at his tiny ships. They're really cool in the flesh - or metal as the case may be!) to the NZ Resources page; also redone my fantasy wargaming on a budget bit on my plastic conversions page

  • 23 June 2001 - Added my own little speil about Cabot's Interior Varnish Stain for use on plastic figures. Just like Min Wax, 'cept it's available over here in NZ - it's even made here in En Zed! It's pretty cool...

  • 14 June, 2001 - Yahoo! Someone brought my Revell 1/72nd American Militia!

  • 13 June, 2001 - Added pictures to my New Line Celtic Light Horse and Celtic Chariot reviews; also added a link to Brendan Moyle's Crusades Website to my NZ Wargaming page.

  • 7 June, 2001 - Umm, for anyone who's interested, I'm running my first on-line auction at Ebay - a mint box of discontinued Revell 1/72nd American Militia for $US 6.00.

  • 5 June, 2001 - Finished my current review of the New Line 20mm metal figures that I have received - the New Line Celtic Chariot.

  • 29 May, 2001 - Added a link to Markco's Homepage (by Mark Ottley, the very fellow who introduced me ancients wargaming with 20mm plastics in the first place) to the NZ Resources page; also added my thoughts on New Line's Mounted [Polybian] Roman Command pack.

  • 15 May, 2001 - Added a link to Stan Walker's DBLCHM - Wargamming with 20mm plastic figures Yahoo! e-Group which grew out of his administration of the Bulletin Board; also added a link to the DBM list to the Rules page, and a link to the NZ Wargaming Discussion List to the NZ Resources page; also started some reviews of the New Line 20mm Metal Ancient figures I received for my birthday.

  • 19 April, 2001 - Added details for the Vegas Wargaming Club (Rotorua), and updated the contact details for the Wellington Warlords; got hold of some copies of DBA 2.0 for sale - $NZ 35.00; also tidied up some of my plastics files.

  • 11 April, 2001 - Added my first negative review - HYTTY Macedonian Infantry; also added a photo of my Pre Packaged DBA Later Carts Army Packs.

  • 4 April, 2001 - A new painting tip from Bill Gallo

  • 2 April, 2001 - Just got my first shipment of Zvezda Persian Infantry for sale - $NZ 14.00.

  • 29 March, 2001 - Got my copy of DBA 2.0 a couple of weeks back (thanks to Stan Walker and his daughter Abby), and it isn't nearly as sucky as I thought it was going to be!

Apart from the compulsory BUA (compulsory?! Give me a break!) and the fact that Wb are still at +3/+2 (Stan and I are fiddling around with simulating a built in supporting Wb where DBA allows. You never see unsupported Wb in DBM, unless they've gone beserk!) they're really quite cool.

LH especially are big movers and shakers (I never played 1.2, so this change in itself may not be new), and the army lists are excellent. Well, ok, apart from the Early Imperial Romans are now not allowed to field a Ps and a LH together.

Which brings me to my point - EIR's now require a compulsory Artillery piece. So, if anyone is after just one of HaT's Roman Bolt Shooters, and doesn't want to pay for a whole box, I can sell one Art piece for $NZ 4.00 ea. (including [20mm] crew and base - the standard bearer will cost you $NZ 0.25c more!) + freight. Just let me know.

Come to think of it, if you're after just one Numidian Light Horse element, I can do you one of those as well.

And while I'm on about DBA 2.0 changes, I've redone my Pre-Packaged 20mm Plastic Later Carthaginian DBA [2.0] Armies in light of the new DBA 2.0 list (added an extra 1 x 4Sp, 1 x 3Wb, 1 x El and 3 x 2Ps and taken out the redundant 3/4Ax all for another couple of dollars. Grand Total now is $NZ 30.00 - that's 'bout $US 12.50), and I've just finished pulling together the Pre-Packaged 20mm Plastic Polyibian DBA [2.0 - actually, no change] Armies for $NZ 22.00 (roughly $US 9.00).

  • 8 March, 2001 - Added some scans sent to me by Jonathan Rhodes of Zvezda's Macedonian Cavalry; also added some close-ups of the Zvezda Greek Infantry and finally updated (and spell checked!) my Mini DBM for DBM 3.0 (anyone able to tell I've had a day off work?!).

  • 23 February, 2001 - Added some pictures of conversions done by Stan Walker.

  • 13 February, 2001 - Added some scans of Zvezda's Persians.

  • 7 February, 2001 - Added an English translation of what's available from Zvezda.

  • 5 February, 2001 - Updated some of my NZ Wargaming contacts; also updated my stock list.

  • 1 February, 2001 - A new conversion tip on replacing plastic spears from Kosta, himself a recent plastics' convert.

  • (30 January, 2001 - At last! The first of my Pre-Packaged 20mm Plastic DBx Armies is ready for sale. DBA Army #31b - Later Carthaginians.)

  • 29 January, 2001 - Another painting tip, this time from Michael Wong about how he uses Artist's Gesso.

  • 25 January, 2001 - My first genuine update for the year. Added some painting tips by Scott MacPhee; and also updated my stock list.

  • 10 January, 2001 - Welcome to the new year! Not so much an update, but rather just to say I've been really busy (with such things as my youngest daughter breaking her leg!), but I do have some stuff in the pipe line. In the mean time, I did manage to get Sci Fight redone.

  • 21 November, 2000 - Welcome to my new URL - www.geocities.com/dbplastic. I've finally done it - I've out grown my old site! I was using 120% of my allocated 15 megs of web space, so I'm now spliting the whole thing between two URL's. If something doesn't work, please let me know; also, I've just uploaded the latest version of DBM CaseList (an absolutley brilliant little ap that does all your DBM army list maths for you). Download it here.

  • 7 November, 2000 - Stephen Montague has very kindly written up a review of the Italeri Gauls (and I have pretty much finished my Zvezda review); also added a page where I'm selling plastic figures.

  • 24 October, 2000 - Added some more comments about Min Waxing your figures courtesy of John Leahy; added a new link to Scott MacPhee's Military Modeling Site; and I've joined the Small Scale Military Miniatures Enthusiasts Web Ring all about 1/72nd/20mm plasic figures - check it out! (Still working on the Zvezda review - ok, so these things take me a while!)

  • 11 October, 2000 - my giveaway of my old DBM 2.1 rules has been taken up by a fellow in Lower Hutt - less than 12 hours after I posted it! I'm also able to get hold of some mint condition DBA 1.0 rules (note, these are the edition before the current one) for sale for $NZ 5.00 each. Any one interested, please let me know. [Postscript Wednesday, 22 November 2000 - sorry folks, all gone!] (Still working on the Zvezda review)

  • 5 October, 2000 - Oh yeah, and a new shot of some Esci Warband.

  • 4 October, 2000 - Just added a whole heap of photo's that have yet to be worked into the site. In the mean time...Sarmation general, knights and more knights. Also, an Esci Orc general, guard, warrior, riders, troll and the peista resistance, the Orc's baggage. Note, the Orcs are done as per my alternative basing idea. Still working on the Zvezda review

  • 28 September, 2000 - Added a link to Thomas Riegmann's very impressive site Ancient Armies, as well as a new battle report - Dacians vs. Tlaxcallans; also started my review of Zvezda's Mongols.

  • 10 October, 2000 - Just picked up DBM v.3 - anyone want my old DBM 2.1 rule book (actually, they didn't print 2.1 - it's v.2 with annotations (in pencil))? I'll give it away to the first person who asks (so long as they don't mind paying postage - $NZ 0.80 in NZ, about $NZ 1.50 to Aus, $NZ 1.80 to the States - we'll sort that out later).

  • 31 August, 2000 - Finally started adding my backlogged photo's into the gallery. Specifically, my Revell Slingers, [Converted] Revell Light Horse, [Converted] Esci Fast Knights and an EIR Bg element...

  • 16 August, 2000 - Added a link to the HOTT page of Lazarus' Lair, by Bill Bennet, where he's got details of his 20mm plastic Robin Hood and 30mm Hero Quest armies (like my own GW HOTT army); also noticed that I haven't mentioned that I've added a link to The 1/72nd Scale Plastic Figures and Low Cost Wargaming Site by Paddy Shoesmith.

  • 11 August, 2000 - Tony DeLyall has just sent me his latest article Medieval Syrians which I have added to the Picture Gallery. He's also sent be a picture of some Italeri Crossbowmen that he's finished, and I've added it to his Crusader's article.

  • 31 July, 2000 - Not so much an update, as an alteration. Tony Stapells pointed out to me that RayCon 2000 was actually held at Lake Huron in Canada, not the States as I listed it. As he said..."Admittedly Lake Huron also borders on the US, but I happen to live on the north side of the border! A minor point yes...but kind of like calling you Australian.!! Fair enough Tony, point taken! I've adjusted my link to it accordingly.

  • 21 July, 2000 - Finally finished my HaT Roman Artillery review. It's taken ages! First the digital camera shots weren't any good, then the problem with identifying the standard bearer, then starting again from scratch...(then deleting some old files because I'd run out of space on the server - who would have thought I'd use up 15 meg!). Now to start clearing the stuff I've got backlogged...

  • 30 June, 2000 - Added a couple of new New Zealand Wargaming Contacts, specifically one to the Wellington Warlords and Phil Yates' Homepage. Still working on the artillery, but I have fixed an error that I found in my Elephant review whilst doing so, and I have now reposted it.

  • 30 May, 2000 - Not any new stuff as such, just a quick message to say that I'm going to be pretty busy for the next couple of weeks, so ain't much going to be happening at this end for a while. In the meantime, please have a look at (and contribute to) the Bulletin Board. In essence, chat amoungst yourselves! That's what it's there for! Hope to have my review of HaT's artillery finally completed by the time I come back...

  • 24 May, 2000 - Re-posted my SciFight science fiction rules as a PDF file (much quicker download) curtosy of Derek Hohls from SA, who ran my original Word file through his PDF writer. Thanks Derek!

  • 23 May, 2000 - 'Twas quietly surfing the DBA Resource Page, where Chis Brantley pointed out RayCon 2000, a little weekend fighting DBA with 20mm plastic figures! Lot's of nice pickies. Quite encouraging really! (I've added it to my Plastic Links Page).

  • 4 May, 2000 - I've just worked in a Bulletin Board into the site. As I'm basically getting less and less time to keep the site updated, I thought I might try to introduce a public forum for plastic wargamers to discuss their hobby. It's intended to be fairly much self regulating, and I'm not all that sure how it's going to work, but if you've got anything you would like to share with the rest of us, please post a message. By the way, if you've got a v.3 browser, and you keep getting JavaScript error messages, it's got nothing to do with me! I think it's got something to do with GeoCities pop up adds...

  • 22 March, 2000 - Finally finished my review of HaT's Elephants. Actually got the samples before Christmas, but things have been a bit hectic lately. Artillery to follow...

  • 8 March, 2000 - Added a new page by John Leahy devoted to Minwaxing your plastic figures.

  • 1 March, 2000 - Added (and deleted) some new NZ wargame supplier links. Sorry for the delay in updates, been busy writing a site for Grey Skills.

  • 9 February, 2000 - Changed the title of the site, with grateful assistance to Bill Sumruld (a history teacher in New Mexico). DE BELLIS LUDIS CUM HOMUNCULIS MOLLIBUS - "About War Games with Soft Little Men". Thanks Bill!

  • 1 February, 2000 - Added a link to DBM Down Under, a flash new Australian site dedicated to, well, DBM, on my rules page.

  • 26 January, 2000 - Added Claudio's review of Italeri's new Russian Knights.

  • 19 January, 2000 - The first update for the year. Added Claudio Berni's review of the new Italeri Mongols and my own thoughts on making Sarmations out of them.

  • 24 December, 1999 - Finally finished my second photo-essay/battle report of a DBA game between Esci Romans and Revel Celts with some Airfix chariots (I ain't done the first one yet!). It's only taken over a year to do! By the way, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  • 21 Decmeber, 1999 - Added a link to the Hamilton Imortal's page concerning next year's National Convention to my NZ Wargaming page.

  • 9 December, 1999 - Added a couple of Kiwi wargaming sites to my NZ page. World Wide Wargames and Command Post, both being run by Gordon Roach from New Plymouth; also done a heap of formating around the place. If something doesn't work (or the background doesn't show on a page) please let me know.

  • 30 Novmeber, 1999 - Another quick and dirty update. Well, not so much dirty, but...a few more photo's of some of my DBM Early Imperial Roman army - Roman Mounted General (C i C), Roman [Fast] Knights, a Roman Baggage element, and a couple of Italeri Camels (Dromaderi(?) scouts - LH(I)). Again, I'll work these into the site proper a bit later on...

  • 22 November, 1999 - Just a quick and dirty update (I'm re-working a couple of my battle reports). I've brought along my Romans to work and taken a few pickies of them - Esci Cav, Revell LH(O), Revel LH(F), Revel Slingers and Fast Artillery. I'll work 'em into the site (with comments) later.
