Welcome to my Review Section
I have a wide collection of DVDs and videos related to Alice in Wonderland. There are probably around 20-30 different productions of the story. For a full list of Alice productions, click HERE. This includes Broadway musicals, Movies, Television, Guest Appearances and Radio Shows. Just keep in mind that these are MY reviews or opinions. You may see these differently than I do! Enjoy Reading!
The Looking Glass Wars Novel by Frank Beddor
I seriously wished I bought the hardcover of this book, but the store only had the paperback available. I made a long note about this on my Facebook page. Here are some highlights...
Here's the basic plot in a nutshell. The original Alice books written by Carroll were lies! A princess in a land of imagination had to escaped to our world after her evil aunt, Redd, murdered her parents and tried to kill her. She tried to explain her situation to this one man, Lewis Carroll, but the reverend instead twisted her story into a children's book, the story we know today as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". In truth, Wonderland was a land of war. The Mad Hatter from Carroll's story was actually a man named Hatter Madigan, who was the bodyguard for the Queen of Wonderland. The White Rabbit was Bibwit Harte (the letters of "White Rabbit" scrambled), Alyss' teacher. And the Cheshire Cat was an assassin that worked for Redd with nine lives and sharp knife-like claws. Carroll changed everything! During her long stay on Earth, Alyss forgets her past and it's up to these other characters to find her, help return her to Wonderland and have Alyss lead an army to defeat her evil aunt.
The 1985 TV Movie
I've just obtained a DVD that everyone claims is the most memorable of all Alice in Wonderland movies from their childhood. Well, in 1985, I wasn't born yet... so I can't really say that this movie is from my childhood. But I've watched this and it's actually quite enjoyable. The whole thing is about 3 hours long because it has the Alice in Wonderland movie and it also has the Looking Glass movie. It has a Sesame Street kind of feel to it, in my opinion.
Here's the DVD Cover
Actors: Natalie Gregory, Sheila Allen, Sharee Gregory, Red Buttons
Directors: Harry Harris
Format: Closed-captioned, Color, DVD-Video, Full Screen, Subtitled, NTSC
Language: English
Subtitles: English, French
This was a fun PC game. I'm lucky to have a fast computer. The story's not bad. I found this game sitting at a garage sale and thought "What the Heck! Let's buy it!" Then I played it and got hooked after the 1st level.
You should play it too! Why won't you go to GameSpot, which is where I get all my game information, and look it up! Bewary! The game is rated for Mature Audiences. I also hear that there's going to be a movie based on this game starring Michelle Gellar.
After helping my dad at his rental properties, I drove to Toys 'R' Us hoping to find something Alice related, and there it was! The Box was different compared to the ones on Amazon and Ebay but I'm familiar with this version of Alice. This is the DVD that starred Peter Sellers (March Hare), Michael Crawford (White Rabbit), Dudley Moore (Dormouse), Fiona Fullerton (Alice) and Robert Helpmann (Mad Hatter).
On this DVD, there was a little quiz that has 5 of the most easiest questions there are. My finger slipped and I got a 4/5... HAHA!! When I started the movie, I was pretty disappointed. The picture quality was horrible and the sound is ridiculously distorted. I'm always under the impression that people restore these movies for the DVD format. Anyway, when I saw tracking lines, I realize that they simply just took a video and transferred it to DVD directly. No wonder I got this for such a cheap price ($4). The sound? I'm lucky I know how the story goes because I couldn't understand a word!
The movie begins with Lewis Carroll, some guy, and 3 girls rowing in a boat. Then Alice, one of the girls dozed off during a picnic and then the story begins. I find Fiona Fullerton pretty cute, compared to Tina Majorino. Fiona kind of resembles a younger version of Kirsten Dunst in my opinion. The story was very accurate and faithful to the original. I don't get why everyone keeps using the Tweedle brothers though... Once you get past the costumes, you'll enjoy it. The sound and picture quality is my only complaint. Actually, I was a little peeved with the music. The plain ol' instrumental music is fine. But once they start singing, it just gets annoying and you'll start fast forwarding after the first viewing. Overall, I liked it. It's a good addition to my collection.
Paul and I spent HOURS looking for this one DVD and finally found it at Toys R Us. This one is rather fun to watch! There's a lot of good-sounding music and the color is very crisp. I don't have much complaints about this one...
Actually, it's a tad bit kiddy, but what do you expect, right? It's a children's story. There's even spanish audio on this DVD too! The DVD was a bit scratched and it won't run properly but overall, everything's very attractive.
I saw this this DVD at Dillons and thought I get one. It's a collection of all the cartoons that ran during the 20s and 60s at Disney. But I only got it to watch the Alice Comedies. It's these Black And White Cartoons that combined live people with cartoons. Each of the cartoons were like 10 minutes long (more or less). They're silent films and they can be boring afterawhile.. but it's nice to have in my collection!
My Aunt Mary was going to give me this for Christmas or something... But then my cute little cousin liked it too! She had me borrow it. Then my dad dropped it into the video returns at Dillons. That's very funny! My Aunt Mary had to go get the DVD. So much trouble. HAHA!!
Anyway, my parents went ahead and bought this at Wal-Mart. It was only a dollar (without tax). The sound is really distorted and the picture is lousy but it's fun to watch. It doesn't exactly have anything to do with the book. It's more linked to those Madeline books (Yes, the 12 girls). Overall, it's really cute! But it's a tad bit boring... Of course, when I say boring, I meant it is boring for me, a 20 year old college student. The kids might like watching this. My cousin, Allison, sure did.
The most admirable qualities of this 2 hour TV movie are the costumes and the special effects. When it comes to real people, I think this is the best movie by far to have good special effects. The costumes are amazing, specially made by the Jim Henson Company. The Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and the Gryphon were wonderfully made. I especially like how they made the Mad Hatter's Head big so it would match the book's illustrations. The story is accurate with a few added chapters from Through the Looking Glass. And best of all, the acting is wonderful. And that's what I expect from stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Robbie Coltrane, Ben Kingsley, Christopher Lloyd, Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, Peter Ustinov, George Wendt and Gene Wilder.
There aren't very many things that disturb me in this movie. Everything is wonderfully made and all the puppets were really cute. I bet the kids would like the singing, but I find it annoying. The Red Queen (Miranda Richardson) mostly screamed the whole time. I don't mind it, but I can't help covering my ears due to her screaching. The movie ends differently than the book but I don't really care for that. I thought it was good that Tina Majorino played Alice. She's not entirely cute in my opinion (not with those eyebrows) but she was good as Alice. Seriously, I have nothing against the casting of this movie.
I just finish watching the DVD that I got last week or so that was only a dollar. In some ways, I guess a dollar was worth the price because this hour-long cartoon is really old. One of the things that I like about it is that this animated movie is actually more accurate to Carroll's book than the Disney movie. It didn't combine anything and is pretty faithful when it comes to the overall timeline (it touch every part of the story).
All the characters look okay. The artist did a good job when it comes to animation. The look of the movie is really ancient though, it's all yellow and blurry. The picture quality should at least resemble The Ninja Turtles and Transformers, which were made at the same time as this movie. I hate the look of the mice in this movie. I may begin to have a horrible distaste for mice because of this one cartoon. Another thing, Alice was studying "The Principals of Logical Calculus". The HECK! For a 7 year old girl to study that is ridiculous!
The most annoying things about this version of Alice are the voices. Good God! I just can't stand the voices of all the mice. STUPID MICE!!! The mouse in the pool of tears sounds so.. gay! I mean it, for a male mouse to have such a high-pitched voice, I can't stand it! It sounds like his balls are constantly clamped. And the sleeping mouse during the tea party sounds like he's on drugs! I really hope future Alice movies don't make the mice like these. Gosh! I want to have shock therapy to get the voices out of my mind! When characters run, they jump up into the air and freeze there while its legs move in a circle like Scooby Doo and Fred Flintstone. And it even has the same sound effect. That I don't mind so much as the mice. And the theme song is so... I just don't like the tune.
A very interesting thing that one might notice is that the person who voiced the Dodo in this version also voiced the Madhatter in the Disney movie. One of the editors of this production is Peter Jennings, God rest his soul. So overall, if you want to watch this cartoon... get over it. It's best that you don't. I don't exactly recommend it but I'm pretty glad that I have it. Okay.. okay.. I'm being too personal. To tell the truth, the story is pretty accurate and little kids might like this. But I bet you, you'll be wanting to buy traps and loading up your BB Gun for mouse-targeting practice after you've finished this movie.
My sister, Christine, first saw this on TV and told me to check it out. Ever since, I've been looking for a DVD or video of this movie. Before any assumptions can be made, let's make one thing clear. This is not the same movie from the 80s. I haven't seen that one either so I can't really compare which is better. Alice Through the looking glass is the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's not Alice in Wonderland. Which means there's no mad Tea Party or Cheshire Cat.
The surprising thing is this... This movie is the book!! Everything actually resembles! I mean.. I was practically reading along. The dialogue is really faithful. Of course, they had to take away a few things. Afterall, the Alice books are not that easy to make into a movie. One thing that disturbs me is the fact that Alice is a mother in this story. The movie starts out with her talking to her daughter instead of talking to her cat like in the book. But overall, everything was accurate. Well, all the events are accurate but the Alice character herself is kind of old. She says she's 7 years old but look at her... that's not 7. But I rather have Kate Beckinsale be Alice. She's very nice to look at. :)
This movie was made for TV, which means it probably had a small budget. But there were a lot of special effects in this movie. Alice picking up the chess pieces, the transformation through the looking glass, seeing her floating, the CGI works... it's all there. The movie was basically a lot of puppetry and camera tricks. I could've easily made this movie myself. The Walrus and the Carpenter sequence was very funny. Now, I wish they could have a lot more money to keep the characters that Alice meets during her journey in their usual forms. Humpty Dumpty was an Egg for one second and then he turns into a human to converse with Alice. That goes for everyone else too. The story is very faithful to the book, but how it's presented could be better. Wouldn't puppets be better? The costumes are wonderful though! They even added in the Wasp with a Wig chapter!!
I love this movie! I bought it! I couldn't resist. If you like Alice to a very high degree than buy it too! But I recommend just renting it or wait until its next Television appearance. I actually had to watch it twice to understand it because after all... it's an Alice story. There's a lot of poetry and logic and jokes. But you'll understand it!
I first watched this movie when I was around 12 or something. Yeah, a little older than most who usually has their first viewing of this movie when they were toddlers. But I still liked it though. I like Hercules and Beauty and the Beast a bit more but you don't see me making a website out of those movies do you?
I have the Gold Collection DVD, which doesn't really have anything. It has some sing-a-long songs and a featurette but, again, it doesn't have anything. You want a good DVD of this movie, get the 2-disk masterpiece Edition one with the beautiful box cover. I'm not the guy who buys two DVDs of the same movie (Well... I have Terminator in Fullscreen and Widescreen DVD but that's a whole new story). Anyway, give this movie a chance and have an open mind.
Let me tell you a story. I first borrowed this movie at the library. I didn't really like it that much the first time. When I came to my grandparents house, it's like the only movie they have, so we ended up watching it again and again. And if you see something enough times, you'll start to like it.
I showed this movie to my cousins recently and they like it. One cousin, AlexTam, was this young 8 year old boy who wouldn't stay still and screams and is just a wild kid. And when I turned on this Disney movie, he whined saying "This is for girls!" and all that. Then later on, he started to like it. The room fell in silence. I was saying to myself, this is the movie! Then all the cousins together start singing the songs and dancing to the music. It was a good time. This Alice in Wonderland movie brought my family together.
