The Silmarillion Yellow Pages are a directory of online groups and websites that pertain to Tolkien--specifically The Silmarillion--and writing. We hope to develop an extensive online reference where groups and persons interested in The Silmarillion and writing can find each other. As such, we welcome all groups--both large and small--to submit their names to this listing. Please read the guidelines for our listing below and submit your information either using the form provided or by contacting owner/moderator Dawn Felagund.
Groups must be submitted to the listing by an owner or moderator in order to have all information listed in the Yellow Pages or to be eligible for banner/logo exchange. Groups may be nominated for the Yellow Pages by anyone, however. In this instance, SWG will make a reasonable attempt to contact the group's owner/moderator for verification and further submission of information. In the case that this person cannot be contacted, we will make our best attempt at including accurate group/website information. Owners/moderators may request that this information be updated or the listing be deleted at any time, but it is their responsibility to contact SWG with such information.
Groups listed in the Yellow Pages will have their group/website listed under each category for which the group is eligible, will be included in our alphabetical group index, and will have their group listing included in the randomized "Featured Group" box that will appear on each page on our site. This box randomly selects a group from the listing and updates each time the visitor refreshes his/her browser.
Guidelines for Submitting Your Group to the SWG Yellow Pages
Please read the following guidelines carefully before submitting your group for inclusion in the Yellow Pages. These guidelines have been devised to assure that the groups included in our Yellow Pages meet the mission and goals of SWG and will be of value to our members.
- The group must be open to all members who meet the group's admission criteria. In other words, if you have designed an
archive or run an RPG and intend only on welcoming your friends, the Yellow Pages is not an appropriate place to list your group.
Groups reserve the right to establish reasonable admissions criteria for their members, and these groups are welcome to list in the Yellow Pages. For example, groups may exclude underaged members, may open their archive only to members of their mailing list, or may require stories to be reviewed before inclusion in an archive. SWG reserves the right to determine what counts as reasonable criteria. If you are unsure whether your group qualifies, please contact owner/moderator Dawn Felagund. - The group's purpose must pertain either to Tolkien's works or writing in general. Tolkien groups may pertain to his collective works as long as writing about or discussion of The Silmarillion and related works (i.e. History of Middle-earth volumes dealing with the stories and issues of The Silmarillion) are welcomed. Groups that accept writing about or discussion of topics pertaining exclusively to The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings--while doubtlessly valuable to the Tolkien community--do not serve the needs of SWG members and will not be listed in our Yellow Pages at this time.
- Small archives and groups may reasonably, at times, need to become inactive. Such groups are welcome to list in the Yellow Pages but groups that are "dead" or have been abandoned by their moderator (and that have no one interested in taking over moderation responsibilities) are of no use to our members. We ask that such groups not be submitted to the listing until a reasonable amount of group action or moderation resumes.
- Groups that contain adult content are welcome to list in our Yellow Pages. However, the information contained in the listing must be appropriate for all ages. SWG reserves the right to edit or remove material that we deem inappropriate for a non-adult audience.
- Groups that exist solely to mock or belittle writers, stories, or genres of writing are not welcome in our directory.
- SWG reserves the right to visit groups and websites before listing them in our Yellow Pages to assure that our criteria are met. SWG also reserves the right to investigate complaints of groups not meeting inclusion criteria. We are not obligated to list a group in our Yellow Pages, although we will make such a decision only after investigating the group or website and determining it to be unacceptable, either in terms of content or admissions criteria. We also reserve the right to remove a group at any time. We will make a reasonable attempt to contact the group's listed owner or moderator before taking such an action, but in the instance that we cannot make contact with this person, will proceed with removing the group or site's listing without notification.
- SWG does not guarantee that the information provided for our listing by groups or websites is accurate and does not guarantee that groups or sites have been visited or approved by anyone in our organization. Persons who believe that a listed group violates our Yellow Pages criteria are welcome to contact owner/moderator Dawn Felagund, who will make a reasonable attempt to investigate such claims, but will not guarantee that the group will be removed.
- Whenever possible, SWG will attempt to contact the owner or moderators of the groups in our listing so that our information is as
accurate as possible. In the event that we cannot establish such contact after a reasonable attempt, we will provide the information to
the best of our ability. Owners or moderators who submit their group information to the listing are responsible for contacting SWG to
have their information updated.
- Groups who wish to be removed from the listing must have their owner or moderator contact SWG to do so.
- Groups that do not wish to be included in the randomized "Featured Group" box are responsible for making their wishes known to SWG.
- Groups listed in the Yellow Pages are not affiliated with or endorsed by SWG. Persons should always use their best judgment and personal discretion when visiting websites and joining online groups. We make no claims to the accuracy of information presented in the directory and are not endorsing the groups we choose to list.
Logo/Banner Exchange
SWG is happy to display the logo or banner of groups/sites included in the Yellow Pages in exchange for having a logo with a link to our homepage displayed on their sites. Owners/moderators who wish to participate in this exchange should make their interest known when applying to have their group included in our listing.
If you are interested in having your group/website participate in this exchange, please read the guidelines below.
- SWG will display in the Yellow Pages and in the alphabetical group listing the banner or logo of any group participating in the exchange. In the instance that the owner/moderator provides a logo 100 pixels by 100 pixels or smaller, the logo will also be included in the randomly selected "Featured Group" that appears on all SWG pages.
- Groups/websites participating in the exchange are agreeing to also display the SWG logo and link on their site. The logo should be placed in a prominent or logical location, such as on a "Links" page.
- Participation in the exchange will be done on the honor system. We are not going to monitor sites to assure that our logo is kept prominent and in working order. However, if we discover that our logo has been removed from a site participating in the exchange, we will make every effort to contact the site's owner to have it restored. In the instance that the owner cannot be contacted or refuses to restore the logo/link, we will also remove the group/website's banner/logo from our site. The group's listing will remain.
- Banners/logos must be smaller than 100k and sent to us in .jpg, .gif, or .png format. Logos to be included on the "Featured Group" box must be 100 pixels by 100 pixels or smaller. We will gladly make our best efforts to reduce logos to this size if the group does not possess the means or software to easily do so.
- We will upload logos and banners to our own server. We expect that participating groups will do the same with our logo and will not "hotlink." If you are not participating in the exchange but nonetheless wish to use our logo on your homepage, please upload it to your own server or contact us for permission to link to it on ours. Please do not "hotlink" without permission.
- If you want us to display a banner of a large file size, we reserve the right ask to link to that image on your server. We will ask before doing so but it is your responsibility to tell us if you wish us to discontinue doing this.
- We will gladly display a banner/logo for groups not participating in the exchange, but we must be able to link to these images on the group's server. We will not upload them to our server except with special permission. Images that continually display improperly will be removed after SWG makes a reasonable attempt at contacting that group's owner/moderator.
- SWG is a group that welcomes visitors of all ages, and our Yellow Pages are an all-ages area. We will not display banners or logos that contain material that we consider inappropriate or "adult."
