Grantham Letter, October 5, 1965

This is one of the earliest letters to Ozzie Davis from Mrs. Joseph (Sue) Grantham of Decatur, Georgia.  Mrs. Grantham served as one of his primary researchers during the 1960s and 1970s.  Several items of interest here are the discovery of Lawson and Lucretia Davis in the 1860 census for Glascock County, the suggestion that Johnson may be Lucretia’s maiden name, and the cost of Mrs. Grantham’s research efforts ($10).

Dear Mr. Davis:

Enclosed is the first part or your report. In Items

11, 20, 48, and 58, you will find Lawson G, Davis.

The 1860 Census of Glascock County was very hard

to read, but we do find Lawson G. Davis with his mother,'

Lucretia, and his brothers.  Does the name, Johnson, mean

anything to you?    Perhaps this was Lucretia's mother.

I was very disappointed that we did not find the father,

"Jugger", but I plan to work some surrounding marriage

records further.  At least the name is Lucretia and not

Mary, Elizabeth, or what have you!!

Could you fill out some sort of ancestral chart

for me?  This would make things easier for us both.  Also,

please list any records, which you have had searched beside

the census records you made note of in your letters.

It seems that your $10.00 went for nothing much,

but it is encouraging to find even a hint of Lawson G,

Davis.  Now, just which Rutha Glover was it that he

married?

Glascock County was cut off from Warren County

in December 1857, as you will see,  So far we have no

records nor plans for microfilming them,  We know no one

except Mrs. Newsom there, in Washington County, and I

have dug out all I can here on Glascock.  Of course, I

feel that Warren maw hold some answers somewhere. Incidentally,

how did you know Mrs. Newsom?  She is a wonderful person.

She has helped us a lot in many cases.

I am enclosing a notebook for your Davis notes

so that you can keep them all together in one place, and

when you write please refer to item number such and such.

Regards to Mrs. Davis and let me hear from you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Joseph W. Grantham
