| October, 2004 The Core Area Dog Park will happen! The City Council, 5-0, passed the resolution to have the city's dog park (first of many:)) placed on Second Street, west of Pole Line. We will keep everyone up to date as to what needs to happen next. They will need to fence it and put water there, as well perhaps as some other improvements to this area. We all need to take pride in bringing this to the rightful end - a place for our dogs to run!! August, 2004 City Council accepted the Environmental Analysis of the Core Area Pond, based on the report generated by an independent environmental consultant (click here for the report). One person spoke against using the area as a dog park, but the City Council paid attention to the unbiased report. There was a decent showing of "red shirts" in the audience, and this has continued to gather notice by the City Council. We are in the stages of planning a "grand opening" for the fenced dog run in Community Park for Sunday, August 29th from 5 to 7 p.m. June, 2004 Meeting Minutes for 6-18-04 There have been a lot of things going on. The City Council had formed a subcommittee of Ted Puntillo and Stephen Souza to address the issue of dog parks in the City. The Council has entered into a temporary lease on approximately 1/2 acre property on Cantrill Drive, across from the City Police Station, to be used as a dog park. The City Council turned down recommendations to fence the dog runs at Sycamore and Slide Hill Parks, as well as turning down the use of the drainage ditch in north Davis, off of F Street.. At the joint meeting between the City Council and the Recreation and Parks Commission, both sides stated their goals for the current Council term, which included addressing the dog park issue. Five people wearing red shirts in support of the dog park issue showed up at this meeting, which were all 5 "public" people present. At the joint meeting between the City Council and the Open Space Commission, again both sides stated their goals for the current Council term. The discussion involved issues regarding the proposed dog park at Core Area Pond area, and whether this area is considered "open space" or "recreational use". May, 2004 May 4th City Council meeting: The City Council literally saw RED when over 50 people showed up in support of developing and maintaining off-leash dog parks in Davis. April, 2004 Davis City Council Minutes from March 9, 2004. Three separate people appeared at the meeting speaking out against the cemetary dog park, and one member of the cemetary board will vote AGAINST renewing the lease. See page 3 of the minutes. From City Council Meeting on 4-13: The cemetery dog park is closing ***JUNE 1*** of this year. The City Council decided against renewing the lease at this area due to complaints from multiple people stating that dogs were jumping onto people visiting grave sites, and urinating on the graves as well. The Core Pond Area was put up by Councilmember Souza as a viable alternative for a dog park that can be QUICKLY acted upon. An environmental analysis has been ordered to be performed, as 4 of the 5 Councilmembers voted to go forth with this study. April 31th: DDOG had an excellent turnout for the meeting, with close to 50 people attending. November, 2003 A letter was sent to the members of the City Council and to the Davis Enterprise, cc'd to people who are on the mailing list, regarding our deep disappointment concerning their decision about not even studying what POSSIBLE effects that a dog park may have on the retention pond next to what is now a soccer field. Other members of the public sent letters to the Councilmembers, as well as to the Davis Enterprise. October, 2003 At the City Council Meeting, the Council voted against having a dog park placed at Core Area Pond. The original motion set forth to the Council was to do further analysis of POTENTIAL harm to the area, and they denied even further evaluation. View the minutes here (page 5-6) Also at this meeting, the City Council voted to accept the Recreation and Parks Commission recommendations to ammend their Master Plan, recognizing that dog parks and dog runs are needed. September, 2003 At the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting on September 18th, the Commission made the recommendation to include dog parks and dog runs in the Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan. Tiffany Stutzke and Melissa Bain were present at that meeting. View the minutes here (pages 3-4) |
