What is The Davis All-Gurl Revue?

The Davis All-Gurl Revue is a celebration of Womens History Month scheduled to take place Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the Veterans Memorial Theater in Davis, California. The Revue will follow a cabaret-style format. Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and San Francisco native Noe Venable headlines. Together with a wide range of Davis and Sacramento based bands, poets, fiction writers, dancers and choreographers, publicists, dramatists, DJs and costume designers, the Revue promises depth as well as range of talent. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Womens Wisdom Project, a division of Sacramento Food Bank Services.

Our Mission Statement:

The members of the Davis All-Gurl Revue share a commitment to creating environments in which women mentor each other in the performing arts. Since October, 2002, we have held regular weekly organizational meetings, discussions, and workshops on a wide range of topics, from womens poetry to the burlesque revival currently sweeping the nation. Our weekly 7:00 pm organizational meetings and discussion groups, held at Delta of Venus Coffeehouse, open up into an 8:00 pm open mike where female performance artists can try out new material with the support of their peers. In this way, the Davis All-Gurl Revue functions as a working group on womens performance art, both in theory and in practice. More than fifty women have already become regular participants in the Davis All-Gurl Revues weekly events.

While The Davis All-Gurl Revues March performance acts as a catalyst for creative collaboration, our vision extends beyond one night alone. Because we believe in the uniquely transformative power of the performing arts on the human mind, body, and spirit, we are committed to nurturing a sense of support for performance artists in our community, especially as that work pertains to womens issues. Above and beyond production expenses, most of which are being covered by generous donations from local businesses, all of the proceeds from the Davis All-Gurl Revue will be donated to the Womens Wisdom Project. The Womens Wisdom Project is a division of Sacramento Food Bank Services that incorporates the healing power of art in recovering and creating stable and productive lives for women in transition from poverty, mental illness, and abuse.
