What makes hand thrown pottery special?

For some, it's the beauty of a finely crafted art object.
For others, it's the charm of using a hand-made vessel.

Then there's the person who has actually tried to throw pottery on the potter's wheel.  This person can fully appreciate many more of the qualities imparted to the piece by the potter.  The lightness and  balance of the pot, the shape and taughness of the form, the color and finish of the glaze and so many more details that the average viewer misses.  It could easily be compared to the difference between a cup of drip coffee and a perfectly prepared cup of gourmet espresso.  Do they do the same thing?  Yes.  But to the well informed consumer, there is a world of difference.
