| Shows and Festivals I host: |
Hello, My name is David Willhite. I am a full time studio potter and sell my work all around Oregon. I'm out selling at festivals and shows for 30 weekends a year. I have about 10 stores that sell my work as well and I sell online at Etsy.com . I also teach weekly classes in my home studio. I learned from a great teacher I first learned the basics of hand throwing pottery from my high school art teacher, Paul Renner in 1992/93. "Mr. Renner" was a professional potter before he decided to become a teacher. He made sure I knew how to do each step in the process of making pottery, mixing glazes, firing kilns and recycling clay. He even loaned me his personal wheel to take to college for several years. Early Career I was encouraged to sell my work by Dave and Denise Middleton, of Lakeshore Myrtlewood (former owners of Rogue River Myrtlewood). They bought my pottery wholesale when I was still in high school and they never treated me like the kid I was. At the age of 17, I started selling my pottery in the largest art gallery on the Oregon coast, Second Street Gallery in Bandon, Oregon. My parents bought me my first kiln as a highschool graduation present (at my request, instead of a laptop) and my grandparents helped pay for me to have an old WWII amunition bunker wired for electricity. I rented it from the local airport for almost 10 years. It was across town from my aparment where I made my pottery. My Studio Now I own a home and have my kiln there, along with my studio. I have 2 electric kilns, a raku kiln, 4 pottery wheels, a slab roller, an extruder, lots of shelves, glaze materials and buckets of glaze. Interests Although I have specialized in hand thrown pottery, I also enjoy drawing, poetry and watercolor painting. In my free time I like to go on walks with my family, work in my vegetable garden, go skim boarding with my best friend on a deserted Oregon Beach (there's no competition for waves except for him). I also like to play my guitar or piano, write songs, watch movies or a favorite TV show. In 2008/09 I am building a 700 square foot addition onto my house. Apart from the block work and an occasional freind or family member, I'm doing all the work myself. Shows I have hosted I created the Winter Art & Chocolate Festival in Brookings, Oregon in 2006 and it's still going strong. I also started a "Small Business Expo." in North Bend in 2008. I hosted the 20th Annual Calico Bazaar in Gold Beach. I also did a few shows in Bandon one Christmas Season and it was called the "Bandon Old Town Holiday Market". |
