Raleigh, NC, to Lawrenceville, VA
108 miles
A typical pit stop--with port-a-johns, food, water, Gatorade, medical, and bikes dropped on every open space.  We all looked forward to seeing the "Pit Stop, One Mile Ahead" signs on the road.
Here is Rider 1282 looking sweaty, taking a moment to enjoy the fun in Warrenton, North Carolina.  Everyone stops in Warrenton, even though the actual pit stop is about a mile down the road.  The people were so friendly!
We saw many displays of support on the road in the most unlikely places.  This one, red ribbons dangling from trees, was particularly beautiful.  This was just a mile or two before coming into Warrenton, North Carolina.
Yes, AIDS has reached even rural places like Warrenton. Here, on the Warrenton courthouse square, we are reminded of the seriousness of our journey amid the music and festival atmosphere.
At later pit stops, crew set up fun toys for us to cool off with.  We were fortunate to have so many schools, churches, and municipal buildings donate their parking lots, water connections, electricity, and shady trees for us.
