| Current US Fish and Wildlife Services reports state that there are 35.2 million adult anglers in this country. Another 14.8 Million youngsters also fish those same waters. A quick mathematical exercise will show that over 50 million enjoy the sport throughout the states. These statistics not only reflect the populatiry of a worthwhile pastime, but also give definition to an ever-growing culture. This sport is one that I happily subscribe to and hope that my children learn to love as well. My pursuit of the "Big One" has taken me to some of the most beautiful surroundings that I have ever seen. It has taught me patience and kept me off the streets as a youth. Though this love I hvae acquired a respect for the planet, it's dynamics and interlocked ecosystems. It has given me "understanding". Another facet of being part of the fishing culture is "responsibility". Responsibility to the future of the world's resources, for the education of youth, and for the integrity of the sport. This is one concept that can not be stressed enough. Following regulations, using common sense, and supporting / partaking in education programs is essential for the future of not only our sport, but of the worls as we know it. Just think of it, 50 million people utlizing resources that have historically been treated as unlimited and have most recently found to be very fragile, or in some cases, threatened. It is our responsibility as landlord, to understand this planet and protect it, for our children and theirs as well. Also, given the number of us that have personal stake in these resources, the industry, the future of the sport, we should all be sure to register to vote and voice our opinions in forums and on legislation in regards to conservation or regulation of the outdoors. Educated input can make a world of difference and again, save the future of our fragile environment. I hope that this page, and the linked pages help you and yours in becoming more proficient in the sport. Don't forget to share the knowledge, especially with the children in our lives. They ARE the future and it has been documented that if you don't get a child involved in fishing before their teen years, it is very likely that they will never fish. Tight Lines, Tread Lightly and take out more trash than you packed in!! David |
