Minbari

Dukhat

The leader of the Minbari Grey Council when humans made first contact with the Minbari. He is generally considered to have been the most evolved and wise soul of all the Minbari.

Dukhat first met Delenn while she was acolyte, when she acted as his guide and protector while he was in The Dreaming, and he soon began to suspect that she might be a descendant of Valen. Dukhat later used Delenn to stress his point with the Grey Council that the Minbari should make contact with the humans and not allow their prejudices to effect their decision when simple curiosity should suffice. Although the Grey Council did not change its mind, actually strengthening its resolve as Dukhat had expected, they had been alienated against Delenn as a result, and so Dukhat took it upon himself to be her tutor, naming her as his aide the same day.

Dukhat's suspicions about Delenn's ancestry was proved correct at her inauguration to the Grey Council, when the Triluminary used in the ceremony illuminated in response to Valen's DNA, but his explanation of this to Delenn was cut short when the Grey Council's fleet became the first Minbari fleet to encounter human ships. Dukhat's order to close the gun ports in spite of the warrior caste tradition came seconds too late as the human ships opened fire at close range, devastating the Minbari fleet and mortally wounding Dukhat. He died in the arms of Delenn, naming her as his successor.

His explanation of her parentage however was lost in the noise of battle, and was to remain unknown for over a decade until Delenn was to undergo a Dreaming of her own to justify her relationship with John Sheridan. Delenn meanwhile was devastated by Dukhat's death and ordered "No mercy!" when asked for her deciding vote in the decision of how to respond to the humans - an event that led to the Earth-Minbari War. When she had time for more rational thought, it was too late as the Minbari jihad was well underway.

Despite his claims to Neroon that life and death were the same thing, not to be feared, and that death should be seen as a release from obligations for a warrior, Shakiri's convictions were proved to be less than sincere when he was not prepared to die for his cause when challenged to join Delenn in the Starfire Wheel.

She gave a recital of some of her works, including a piece she had spent many years working on, entitled "In the Light of Two Moons". She later visited Earth where she was honored by the Earth Alliance.

While in Medlab, it was her comments to Ambassador Londo Mollari that acted as the trigger for his change of heart towards the two Centauri lovers, Kiron Maray and Aria Tensus.

"Ambassador, I have traveled far and seen much. And what I have seen tells me that all sentient beings are best defined by their capacity and their need for love".

As soon as he could walk Tannier confronted Trace in downbelow in accordance with the rite of Mora'dum, (the Application of Terror), beating Trace in a one-on-one combat with the denn'bok.

As a result of his bravery in facing Trace and his own terror, Delenn made a request that Tannier be assigned to the house guards of herself and John Sheridan once they moved to the as yet unbuilt headquarters of the Interstellar Alliance at Tuzanor. When he was later questioned by his tutor over the matter, Rastenn confessed to being afraid, not of dying but dying needlessly, without meaning, to which Turval responded with a lesson that concluded "death will have meaning if it comes when you are in fullest pursuit of your heart."
