"Sleeping in Light" - 20 Years Later

The final episode of Babylon 5, set on Minbar, twenty years after the Shadow War and the formation of the Interstellar Alliance. A sleeping Sheridan is dreaming of Lorien, the First One, who brought him back from the dead at Z'Ha'Dum by giving of himself to replenish Sheridan's life force, but told him he had just twenty years to live. That time is now up.

Sheridan wakes and goes onto a balcony to look at the beautiful city of Tuzanor, and watch the sunrise. Delenn joins him and takes his hand. "I'm almost out of time, Delenn," he says. "But time enough ..." "Do you want me to send the messages?" Delenn asks. "Yes. Send them," he replies. The sun starts coming up, and they both watch the sunrise, embracing in silence.

Ivanova is now a General, and the door to her office on Earth bursts open. A Ranger hands her a note. In a quiet, reflective voice she says, "Tell him, I'm on my way."

On Centauri Prime, Emperor Vir is in bed with two women when there is a knock at the door. A Ranger hands him an invitation...

On Mars, 16 year old Mary Garibaldi is playing tennis with Dr. Franklin. Her father looks up from his paper and tells her that he will show her how to play the game properly. However, a Ranger has arrived at their house with a message...

They all gather on Minbar for one final meal together. However, as they reminisce about old times, their laughter is tinged with sadness. Sheridan proposes a toast to absent friends "G'Kar, Londo, Lennier and Marcus". Before the others wake up the next morning, Sheridan takes out his black uniform for one last time. Delenn greets him and they know this will be the last time they will see each other. They fight back tears and embrace for one last time.

"Good night, my love, the brightest star in the sky." "Good night, you have been my sky and my sun and my moon."

Eventually, reluctantly, they pull away. He heads out to the ship waiting for him without looking back.

Sheridan stops at Babylon 5, which like him, is almost at the end of its time. Redundant and in the process of being decommissioned, it is almost empty, just the memories remain now. Then Sheridan sees Zack, who looks a little older and walks with a limp, but he talks about how they changed the world. As a dizzy spell passes over Sheridan, he knows that it's time for him to go now. He heads for Coriana 6, where the First Ones left twenty years earlier. A jump point opens and his ship enters normal space.

He holds position, staring out at the stars until a faint blue-white light light forms outside his ship. A shimmering vision of Lorien appears.

"Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here? Where are you going?" - Lorien to Sheridan.

Lorien has been waiting for Sheridan, for the time he would return to the End of the Beginning, to go beyond the Rim and begin a new journey. A soft white light slowly surrounds him. He stops breathing and in that moment of stillness, the light intensifies until it engulfs him completely, then he disappears beyond the Rim.

Back on Babylon 5, Ivanova joins Vir, Zack, Garibaldi, Delenn, and Franklin at the decommissioning ceremony. They leave the station in a shuttle, passing between two rows of ships from all the races. The last workman (none other than The Great Maker, JMS himself!) turns off the lights. As the lone shuttle leaves, there is a deep rumble in the core of Babylon 5. Then the Station explodes and is consumed in fire.

Meanwhile, on Minbar, Ivanova becomes head of the Rangers and dresses herself in the robes of Entil'zha (Ranger One).
Entil'zha

Delenn, alone now until she and Sheridan meet again "in the place where no shadows fall," watches the sun rise across Tuzanor. Sheridan's ship is recovered from the Coriana system, but, curiously, his body is never found ...
