"Alt.pave.the.earth" is a newsgroup. You might have figured that out
yourself. It's also the official forum for discussions by Pavers; again,
you seem to have figured that out for yourself.
Perhaps what's confusing you is the question of the Pavers' ultimate goal.
And that's understandable. Who would have thought that a group called
"Alt.pave.the.earth" would have anything to do with paving the Earth?
But, surprisingly enough, that's what it's all about. I know you'll be
pleased to learn this, because all right-thinking, upright, and
intelligent people (such as you seem to be) naturally long to see this
goal implemented as soon as possible. I'm sure you'll want to join us at
once in our planning for this wonderful future.
I think that part of your confusion may have arisen from the fact that we
are forced to speak in code much of the time. Sadly, and incredibly, not
everyone sympathizes with the PaveGoals. (In your innocence you may not
have realized this, but astonishing as it may seem, there are groups out
there who actively oppose covering the entire Earth with a layer of
Asphalt and then driving on it at high speeds. These groups include
environmentalists, gardeners, vegetarians, the French people, and
representatives of Alt.destroy.the.earth. We tend to lump them all in
one category which we call, for no particular reason. "PitSlaves.")
Anyway, the result is that not all of our discussion here is immediately
intelligible to the outsider. Since you are such an enthusiastic
proto-Paver, I'm going to bend a rule and explain a few of these code
words and phrases to you.
