| Guts n gore movies are a little respected genre in the movie pantheon. I like them, though. Theyre fun. Theyre monster movies with human-shaped monsters. They seldom have delusions of grandeur. They are out to shock you, to make you cringe. If you say Eeewww or That was so gross its high praise. They are not actually scary, but they do show you horror. The new king of monster movies is Freddy Vs. Jason, a showdown between two of the most beloved horror guys of all. Freddy is the main character in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. His hunting ground is the dreamscape, although he prefers the dreams of the residents of Elm Street in Springfield. Jason belongs to the Friday the Thirteenth shows. He slays anyone whos stupid enough to visit Camp Crystal Lake. The movie has twice the gruesome slayings, twice the horror humor, and does indeed use both locations. On top of that, the writing is top-notch, the special effects are great, and some of the fight sequences are really, really cool. Lets face it, if hack and slash movies didnt tap into a dark part of movie watchers it wouldnt be a lucrative type of movie. The next time that dark part of you wants a show, this should definitely be it. The show starts off with Freddy resurrecting Jason. Okay, nobody remembers Freddy in Springfield anymore, and Freddy gets his power from fear. No memory of him = no fear of him. Since he has visited hell a couple of times he decides to see if theres anyone there who can help him. He finds the soul of Jason Voorhees and speaks to him through his dreams. Jason cant be killed, so whenever hes in the dead place hes really just sleeping. At least, thats what Freddy convinces him, and since Freddy can talk to him, its got to be a dream. Ta-daa! Thats horror movie logic for you. So Freddy (looking like Jasons mother) tells him to get up, go to Elm Street, and wipe out anybody there who pisses him off. Since fornicators are people who Jason doesnt like he first kills someone in a bed, and the adults of the town figure Freddy is back. So Freddys plan works perfectly. Word of Freddy starts re-circulating and people who never heard of Freddy start to be scared of him. Hurray for Freddy. However, Jason keeps killing people, in non-sleep situations, and is seen doing it. People figure Hey, its not some dream guy whos doing this, its the huge guy in the hockey mask. You know, the one with the machete. Bad for Freddy. Now Freddy has got to stop Jason from killing the people, because thats taking victims and power away from Freddy. Thats where the Vs. part of the title comes in. Really the humans are just screwed either way. I havent seen every Nightmare nor every Friday show. In fact, until now I had only seen the first N.O.E.S. and the one of the F.T.T. movies. I thought I would be confused. At first I was. There were some characters talking about some murders and suicides that had happened in Springfield, and I figured they were part of the movie history. I asked around and found out they werent covered in any movie: they just set up the characters in the current one. I guess they cant make a whole movie every single time one of these guys goes on a killing spree. There would be dozens of them. Oh waitthere are dozens of them. ANYWAY, you dont have to watch these in order; you dont have to have seen many of either series. The moviemakers fill you in on what you need to know, and then they fill in any blanks with stories that no one has heard before. Its considerate of them. I rate it: Full Price (but only if youre in a hack-n-slash mood) Robert Englund as Freddy Ken Kirzinger as Jason Monica Keena as Lori Kelly Rowland as Kia Jason Ritter as Will |
