Did everyone enjoy last posts link?
After all that Final Fantasy humor I wanted to play some of the games, & I found just the site. They offer an emulator of every old-school Final Fantasy game, free. For real. Theyve got the roms & the emulators to play them; theyve even been translated into English. I recommend FF4, go on, play it.

Spring break in Santa Barbara was pretty fun. I came back with a new car and plenty of sleep. I needed it too because spring term is pretty tough. This term Im taking Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, & trombone lessons with brass choir (yes thats 3 music classes), Type Structures & Type: The Letter (yes 2 typography classes), Japanese, & Kendo. At least I have Fridays off.
But that doesn't mean I havn't been updating. I recently noticed that the latest art I had online was from Fall term this year, this could not stand. So after much reformatting & uploading I finished posting my design projects from last term as well as a few of the better sketches that led there (under "scraps"). That makes 9 new images for your viewing pleasure. As always there's more to come.

Week before last my sister & I were at the Sakuracon, an anime convention, up in Seattle. Pretty fun stuff overall, some cool functions, a couple good dances & some quality anime. The dealers room yielded some overpriced but great swag too: I bought an Evangelion currier bag, a Penny Arcade shirt, a Guilty Gear X art book, & a couple of old anime titles I hadnt seen before; Macross Plus & Harlock Saga. Only drawback was entering the week with barely any sleep from staying up all night watching movies.
Meanwhile online: The new Gorrillaz video: Feel Good is out. It seems to have higher production values than their previous, but I didnt really start to like the song until I heard it with the video minimized while working. Its actually pretty catchy; I cant wait to buy the next CD. My only beef was a lack of noodle, she always adds a good flavor, so to speak. Also the new movie by the maker of Shaolin Soccer came out yesterday; Kung-Fu Hustle should make it into even our usually reluctant Salem theaters.
In other news I was stopped by a cop after Kendo on Monday. After practice I changed back into street clothes, put my wooden bokuto on the bag & my bamboo shinai on my back & headed home. A security van drove past and pulled into the street by Sackett hall. . . & didnt come out the other side. When I approached the corner I was met by an officer talking into his shoulder radio with his hand on his hip, I need ya to stop here for a minute. Is that a sword?
I explained that it was practice equipment & showed him they were made of wood. Which is legal. Apparently someone had called the police to report a man with a sword walking by. I had to wonder if the event would have gone as smoothly if I didnt look white. Later that night I checked into the legality of bladed weapons on campus. Switchblades are banned specifically but no mention was made of swords or other knives. Only our instructor & the top student Todd are ranked high enough to use a real sword anyway. Still, that makes twice now Ive been stopped by the police for practicing an art of some kind.

The final concert of the year is this Friday the 3rd, at 7:00 in the LaSells Stewart Center at osu. I'll be preforming in 3 of the groups: the concert band, a brass choir, & the osu Wind Ensemble. Be there if you can; it'll be quite a bit of awesome music. Update coming later.

Well I am tired.
Concert season is now in full gear. I had 6 performances Thurs. & Ive got another tonight. 6 in one day? Thats right. My Low Brass teacher holds a small group after band Wed. night, theres no credit & anyone can attend who wants to. This Thursday our Brass Choir went on a tour of rural Oregon schools. We left OSU at 6am & played a truck stop to celebrate the chefs 12thyr. anniversary working there (& get a free breakfast). Then it was off to a combined grade-middle-high school, a high school, a grade school, & Century high school (one that beat my old school in marching band).

The purpose was to inspire the kids to get involved with music & to go to college. We played the beautiful choral Adagio by Saint-Saens, the renaissance-style Sonata by Daniel Speer, Bill Reichenbachs arrangement of Scarborough Fair, the Mass piece Graduale (Locus Iste) by A. Bruckner, & the Susa march The Royal Welch Fusiliers. After playing we gave a little speech about what we were studying & college in general.
          When we got back
we had a rehearsal in the Student Union lounge & a couple hours later, a concert at the LaSells Stewart center. We have another concert tonight at LaSells at the finale of the State high school band championships. South high, my old alma, is not favored to win this year, most of the group is made up of Sophomores, so it looks like the streak will come to an end (although a Salem school will probably still win). Anyway it all goes down at 8:30 tonight.
If you cant make that one
the next concerts Thurs. 5 : 19 at Noon in the Memorial Union. Heres the program:

Canzona per Sonare No.2 (just us brass)
4 Dances from the West Side Story (a great piece)
Suite of Miniature Dances (8 or so 1-min. long songs)
          Shenandoah (with my opening solo)
March of the Cute Little Wood Sprites (PDQ Bach if youre into that)
          O Magnum Mysterium (very tough)
Dance of the Jesters (Tchaikovsky wrote more than just the Nutcracker Suite)
Stars & Stripes Forever (a little Susa never hurt anyone)

Thats the most complete lineup this term so if you can make it its worth it. Ill keep updated with a list of the next batch of concerts as I find out the times. There will be at least 2 more this year.

I caught Kung-Fu Hustle last weekend
before it left Salem theaters. I wouldnt say it beats Shaolin Soccer, but it was definitely classic. Here were some of the high points:

          A farmer, a tailor & a breadmaker fighting the 100-person-plus Ax Gang,
          A sleeping man & a Landlady beating 2 mandolin-wielding assassins,
A lockpick prison-breaks the most evil, insane martial artist imaginable.
Fight between enlightened lockpick & said evil martial artist.

Overall it was a fun, over-the-top couple of hours. Definitely recommended. One more tip, the new Gorrillaz cd
Demon Days is out, 15 tracks including the rocking Feel Good Inc used on the recent ipod commercials (you saw it here first).

Another speedy update!
As this quarter carrens to a close I thought I'd spend some otherwhise productive time updating this little site. In retrospect taking 17 credits this term wasn't a great idea, luckily I'm only down for 14 or so next term.
The other good is the sheer volume of sketches I racked up since september due to my drawing class. once I get them back from grading I'll start shooting (they're all around 18" by 24"). So expect those around January. Still havn't started scanning that summer stack of about an inch of sketches, If you've been good boys and girls maybe those'll be up after break too. I also havn't decided how to post this term's typography projects; the postcards will be easy enough but the menu and book projects will require a bit more creativity.
Book, you heard right. our 3rd project (due this Wednesday) is a fully formatted, well-designed, hardbound book, using one provided text and one found on our own, integrated into a unified whole. Needless to say this takes some doing. I'm using John W Streeter's Fat of the Land combined with Hesse's Steppenwolf. So far I've got about 30 pages of a needed 200. Give or take. Now you see why I'm getting twitchy. Aside from the text-recognition and formatting, the binding proccess takes about 2 days in itself. It'll be an interesting week. See you all on the other side.
