Jeryllan arrived at the Citadel just in time. No sooner had she jumped down from the searchdragon's back than she was ushered off to the hatching sands as a white robe was thrown over her back. Medyn ran after her, Thau chirping behind him.
The girl stood on the sands with the other candidates. The mother was a gold, her pale wings splashed with white in a cloudy pattern. Her bronze-winged brown mate bugled as their eggs rocked back and forth.
Jeryllan watched as the first of the queen's eggs hatched into a brown-bronze like his father. The hatchling chose his rider quickly as three more eggs hatched at once.
Two green dragons and a blue emerged from their shells. Jeryllan watched with baited breath as the greens came to the girls, but neither chose her.
Another four eggs hatched simultaneously, spilling a brown, another brown-bronze, a blue-green
and a green-blue onto the sands. Jeryllan gasped at the sight of the little green-blue dragon as she chose her rider.
After that, a lull in the hatching made Jeryllan shift her feet impatiently. She glanced around. There were still plenty of eggs left unhatched, but there were still many more candidates. Would they all have the chance to Impress?
Two more eggs rocked, revealing a blue and a green. Jeryllan watched the green wistfully as the dragonet chose another girl.
A beautiful ocean-green female was the next to hatch, followed by a female blue. Jeryllan caught her breath as the next egg hatched into a female blue-gold dragon. What was with all the cross-gender colors?
A black-white hatched as several people gasped in surprise, followed by a blue-grey dragon called a Maelstrom. Jeryllan caught sight of the Sr. Azhria, Sydne, scolding another man.
The next two dragons to hatch, did so from the same egg. The twin 'Stormy-blues' chose their riders, one male, one female.
The last five eggs all hatched at once, revealing a second green-blue dragon, a normal blue and brown, a blue-brown, and a greyish, 'slate' dragon. The brown and the slate were the first to meet their riders, the brown to a male, the slate to a female.
The green-blue was next as Jeryllan watched anxiously. The dragonet bounded over to the females, and Medyn darted out, sniffing at the dragon suspiciously. Jeryllan watched in confusion. "Medyn, what are you doing?"
The dragon drew to a halt, but not before the cinettai was sprayed with sand. Thau chirped with laughter from his position on Jeryllan's arm, safely out of reach from stray sand.
The dragonet looked up sheepishly at Jeryllan.
Well, it serves you right for getting in my way! The green-blue said to Medyn. Then, the dragon sniffed at Thau curiously. Hey, you're a wierd-looking flit... She said, and snorted as the llithra tapped her nose. Jeryllan lifted her arm up away from the curious dragon's reach, desperate not for anything else to happen. Using her free hand, she reached out to scratch Kaareth's eyeridges, and the hatchling crooned her approval to her chosen.
