| Regarding
the Creation of the Moon and the Sun (Mani and Sun)
there are still another story. It's about Sköll (repulsion) and Hati (hate),
two ferocious wolves that according to the tradition would chase the Sun
and the Moon to destroy them so the world could come back to the original
obscurity and death. Accordingly to some old stories sometimes Sköll and Hati would manage to reach Mani and Sun and they would try to devour the celestial deities. That provoked the eclipses. Then all the people in the world would make such loud noises that they would scare away the wolves and so that Moon and the Sun could get free again. Soon as they were free Moon and Sun would pick up the Cars and run away even faster from the hungry beasts. Altough ancient people believed in the efectiviness of their noises, shouts and screams they knew that everything has it's beginning on the union of Börr (the divine) and Bestla (the death) so sooner or later everything has to die. That means one day Sköll and Hati will capture Mani and Sun and that day not the loudest noise in the Universe will keep those wolves from doing their evil purposes. Regarding this matter they had a lot of other deities like the maidens of the Moon: Hiuki and Bil, deities for dawn, dusk, morning, midnight, afternoon, etc as well as Summer and Winter ( they were enemies, of course....). |
