Interdisciplinary
Connections
Note:
Primary assessment for this project is the student's completion of the
project, which includes both the construction of the airplanes and the
completion of the flight recording data sheet. Use the suggested activities
below for additional assessment pieces.
Art
-
Create
a logo for your airline.
-
Build
a hangar for your airplane out of a shoe box.
-
Create
a collage of flight related items.
Math
-
Compute
the cost of a flight to a city of your choice for a family of four (Would
it be cheaper to fly or drive?).
-
Graph
distance of individual student's or class's flight.
-
How many
outfits can you coordinate using pants of three colors and shirts
of four colors? (You may want to use Unifix Cubes to help students visualize
the possibilities). Chart your results and display your graphs and outfits
on a bulletin board.
Science
-
Use a
different weight or different size of paper and conduct the flight challenge
again. Note differences and similarities.
-
Compare
and contrast flight results, outdoors versus indoors.
-
Change
the design of the plane. How did your plane design results compare
with the results from the challenge?
Social
Studies
-
Pack a
suitcase. Consider where you are going and what you should pack.
-
Choose
a destination to visit. List the states, countries, and bodies of
water you would fly over.
-
Create
a timeline of aviation milestones.
Language
Arts
-
Compare
and contrast traveling by car and by plane.
-
Write
a friendly letter to a classmate describing your imaginary flight.
-
Create
a brochure for your airline.
Health
-
Use sensory
words to write about your flight experience.
-
Role play
difficult situations at an airport, (i.e. air rage or fear of flying, flight
delay).
-
Create
a menu for the airline (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
Careers
-
Interview
or research career opportunities, (i.e. pilot, flight attendants, baggage
handler).
-
Fill out
a job application for an airline job.
-
Role play
different airline jobs (ticket agent, air traffic controller, ground and
mechanical crew).
